I knew nothing about the real case before getting the book, I bought it because someone mentioned it in passing regarding DID. So I didn't know that its veracity had already been dismissed. I could tell it was a fabrication by the patient 20 pages in. That's how obviously convenient the author's words and patient's memory and retelling are. Around 3/4 in the author starts to drag on in an attempt to build anticipation for the final resolution/reintegration, so it was hard to resist the temptation and not just throw it in the bin. The happy ending is also extremely hard to reconcile with the actual reality of this condition and the suffering of those affected. DID does not just away. It's also a good example of how psychoanalysis relies on inference rather than listening to the patient.

"Sybil" is an incredible and captivating book that tells the story of a woman with multiple personalities. Schreiber's writing style is gripping and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat throughout the book. You'll feel like you're right there with Sybil through every twist and turn of her incredible journey to healing and self-discovery. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good true-life story of resilience and survival.
