would a curved #12 blade work in this?

If its a standard blade it should, if its a exact type blade. I can't really tell from here.

Can I use other scalpel blades?

As long as it is for a No. 4 scalpel handle, yes. That cutout in the blade is standardized and the following No’s should all work: 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 22A, 23, 24, 25, 25A, 26, 27, 36
