Headed to Alaska. Would this be a good lens for animals in the distance, whale watching, etc? If not, would you recommend something better?

Will this work with the t7 and be good for cheering competitions?

Not sure about t7 but works for Rebel t6i. Action shots (like cheering competitions) are more a function of the camera body's ISO, shutter speed and aperture. There is no lens stabilizer with this glass. So if you can hold the camera steady, (like a tripod) then it will shoot good for cheering competition. f stop for this lens is 4.0 at 70mm to 5.6 at 300mm. So more light at closer range and more depth of field at far range and less light similar to more expensive lenses. In summary, very comparable with lenses at much higher cost just with no image stabilizer. Also note, mount does not fit canon or sigma tele-converter.
