The contemporary American auteur Michael Mann’s bold artistic sensibility was already fully formed when he burst out of the gate with Thief, his debut feature. James Caan stars, in one of his most riveting performances, as a no-nonsense ex-con safecracker planning to leave the criminal world behind after one final diamond heist—but he discovers that escape is not as simple as he’d hoped. Finding hypnotic beauty in neon and rain-slick streets, sparks and steel, Thief effortlessly established the moody stylishness and tactile approach to action that would also define such later iconic entertainments from Mann as Miami Vice, Manhunter, and Heat.DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew digital restoration from a 4K film transfer of the director’s cut, approved by director Michael Mann, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrackAudio commentary featuring Mann and actor James CaanNew interviews with Mann, Caan, and Johannes Schmoelling of the band Tangerine Dream, which contributed the film’s soundtrackTrailerEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by critic Nick James

James Caan's best performance ever?
Thief begins with the robberies carried out by Frank, who spent 11 years in prison for petty crimes. A misunderstanding causes Frank to take part in major heists on behalf of someone else. Frank wants to start a family without wasting any more time because of the years he lost, so he only accepts 1 job. Then things develop in an unexpected way. Does that sound familiar to you? Mann's principled robber character, ready for his redemption. Just like De Niro in Heat or Cruise in Collateral. The first great example of this stereotypical narrative from Michael Mann. I love this movie, especially because it broke the lousy robber typology of the 70s. If you like Michael Mann, you should definitely watch this, it's one of his best.

Masterpiece
The quality of the resolution on this blu ray is absolutely fantastic. The colors of the neon streets and all the teal/blue lighting is absolutely stunning to look at! Fantastic soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, and that final track is beautiful. James Caan has an amazing performance in this film, and the story told throughout is tragic but amazingly told. One of my favorite films from Mann

Greatest James Caan Movie
Always appreciated this movie as one of James Caans' best film roles. The added value of blue ray and the Criterion Collection putting it together is a great bonus. If you are a fan of gritty diamond heist films with a driving soundtrack provided by Tangerine Dream, this is the movie for you.

Great film and transfer.
I was just at the green mill last night and was happy to see a chicago landmark in this film. The soundtrack is killer and the acting great. This goes in my top 5 James cann. Rollerball and this are tied at the moment for very different reasons.
