With the remote you can shut it off....or you can do like I do....I leave it on the setting I like, and just unplug it when we're done with the gig, then it's ready to go again when I plug it back in! Q: How will this light work at an outside party?

Depends on the application. As long as it is dark enough and has something to display the lights onto it will work great. Would think you would want it to be hanging so the lights will display on the ground. Only way to see the lights if it is facing up would be to have some sort of a roof, ie outdoor pavilion.

Q: This product does not come with any instructions. How do the features for music work at the bottom of the remote? The play, pause, skip buttons?

You play music off of your phone or whatever device you use and put the speaker up to the light then push the music buttons and the light reacts to the music.

Q: Do you need a disco ball for it to work?

No. You just plug it in and you have your own "disco ball".
