Low carb vs. Keto... *by M***D on Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2021* So, I just reviewed a box of their mint flavored cookies (Catalina Crunch Chocolate Mint Keto Sandwich Cookies) and my issue there was that they arrived, smashed, which, at nearly a dollar a cookie, was a big disappointment, to have half the box in bits and crumbs.I did note that they taste delicious, but also noted that, at 5 carbs, for two cookies, they are less of a Keto staple, than they are a much lower carb alternative to an Oreo, and I would almost consider them a "dirty keto" item, given that they do have some sugar, as well as rice flour. So, not the best for a super strict keto regimen, but, of course, a far better option than traditional high carb choices.Here, you get a box of their plain "Oreo" type cookie, which is the first flavor I ever tried from this brand, and they are indeed tasty. Super tasty, in fact. Consistency is different, of course, than a high carb cookie, but, especially if you've been off sugar for a while, these are surprisingly delicious, and about the best lower carb cookies I've had.They also arrived with ZERO breakage! The cookies and cereal are packaged together in their own box, and I think the cereal helped to absorb shocks in shipping. I still hope they figure out how to ship just the cookies, with no breakage but, here, although the cookies were not all in their slots, inside the box, they were all whole, and that fact alone makes it worth ordering them, in this packaging.Then, you also get two bags of their cereal, the "fruity" kind, and a choco/peanut butter mix. Since I don't drink milk anymore, being on keto, I was more looking for a bit of a tasty snack, than a traditional bowl of breakfast cereal, and wow, both flavors are supremely great!!No sugars at all, but, like the cookies, this is not a zero carb snack. The use of potato and corn products pushes this up to 14g of carbs, for a half cup. Subtract the worthy amount of 9g of fiber, and, like the cookies, we're sitting at 5 carbs a serving. So, you're spending a quarter of your day's carbs on one serving, meaning, like the cookies, you can just snarf down a bunch of this stuff, haha.Five carbs may seem low, but, have a bowl of this for breakfast, and 2 cookies for desert, and, there's half your carbs for the day, if striving for the gold standard of being under 20 carbs. So, as I mentioned with the Mint cookies, these tasty choices need careful monitoring, to not wind up sabotaging ketosis.And, that is made a bit more challenging, by the fact that their products do taste so good! The cookies rock, and both flavors of the cereal are excellent, although I'd say the fruity ones are preferred, simply because Fruit Loops were my go to sugar cereal.I could easily enjoy a bowl of either cereal for breakfast, with heavy cream and a small dash of whole milk, and it would be a far better option than a sugar cereal, but it would also be a bit carb heavy, if not precisely measured, to not go past half a cup, and to properly ration the addition of milk.So, possibly not something when on super strict keto, but certainly something great if more on a maintenance stage, or a relaxed regimen. Like the cookies, these might tempt some folks to return to carb laden foods, since the small amount of carbs can kinda wake up some cravings for some of us, but, as a portioned little treat, this is a great find and, while some might get cravings for carbs, I think the Catalina foods I've tried so far are tasty enough, in fact, to NOT return to carbed up options.Not that we're meant to be pigging out on keto, haha, but, even a generous portion of their cookies or cereals, while feeling like a splurge, is still far healthier than even a restricted amount of high carb stuff. I will say that the benefit, here, for slightly more carbs is the fact that their products taste so good.Price? Yes, it's high, but such is the way with keto -- unhealthy stuff is dirt cheap, and healthy stuff costs a fortune. Go figure, haha. But, I'm impressed with the flavor and the crunchy texture is a delight. Color is a bit odd, on the fruit cereal, but they note on the packaging that this is due to the use of plant based dyes, which are so much better for us than all of the usual toxic food dyes.Really great to see a company bringing such a tasty product to market.
