How close does this need to be to the source? I have to film 3 people at once and was told I could boom a condenser or cardioid mic. Can this plug

It all depends on your application and the tone you want. I have used this to close mic acoustic guitars, as an overhead for drums, and as a room mic for live acoustic performances and electric guitar amps. It's a versatile mic that performs really well in a lot of situations.

can i connect this mic directly into my DSLR audio jack?

Not sure, most mics connect using a 3-prong XLR Type connector, so I doubt it.
