As a plumber for over 25 years... I need to comment on an earlier reply to this question. In the earlier reply someone stated "your toilet closet flange has to be either perfectly flush with your finished floor or sitting directly on the finished floor" That is not 100% correct. The flange should “never” be perfectly “flush” with the finished floor.

In the ideal installation the underside of the toilet flange is supposed to rest "on top" of the finished floor. So... if you figure the typical flange is about 1/4" thick, then in the ideal situation with the flange sitting on the floor, the top edge of the flange would be 1/4" above the finished floor - not flush. The Fluidmaster Better Than Wax Toilet Seal includes the Blue bowl gasket and a black plastic spacer. If your toilet flange is sitting "on" the floor surface as described above so the top edge of the flange is about 1/4" above the surrounding floor then you DO NOT use the black plastic spacer, you only use the blue ring. If the top edge of your flange is "flush" with the surface of the floor then you use the black plastic spacer to add to the height of the flange raising it above the surface of the surrounding floor. If after adding the black spacer your flange is only flush or lower than the surrounding floor then you need to purchase another kit or get another spacer(s) from the local hardware store to raise the top edge to the flange above the surround floor. The Blue ring is put in place "after" the top edge of the flange is above the surface of the surrounding floor.

To answer the original question... if it's too tall when the kit is installed remove the black spacer (When used in a installation where the flange is at the correct height the black ring should not to be used.) NOTE: When the toilet is initially placed on top of the blue ring... the toilet will be "slightly" elevated (not sitting right on the floor). This is because the Blue ring is holding it up and it is meant to be squashed / compressed when you tighten the toilet down thus making an air tight seal. HOWEVER: Be aware, in "some" installations, even when the flange is positioned correctly... the Blue ring cannot be compressed enough to make the toilet contact the floor (without fear of breaking the toilet when tightening it down) Unlike a wax ring that will squash as much as needed, the Blue ring will not squash entirely and in some cases can keep your toilet from contacting the floor. In this case I'd recommend using a wax ring. The problem usually occurs because not all flanges are the same thickness... some are 1/4" thick, some are 3/8" etc. Ideally the top edge of your flange should be no more than 1/4" above the surrounding floor surface when using this bowl gasket.

will it work on a drain that is only 2 1/2 opening?

No it won't.   I have an flange inside the 3" pvc drain pipe (2 1'2+ opening.  This seal doesn't come close to fitting.  Was hoping this "UNIVERSAL" seal was the real deal.
