Let Lumē DRY before smelling it!
I've ordered online twice and once on Amazon. I've tried the unscented, clean tangerine, soft powder, and toasted coconut. The toasted coconut smells sooo good! The subtly sweet coconut smells delicious. It's my favorite of the 4 scents I've tried. Soft powder is my 2nd favorite. It smells very clean and fresh. I love the unscented when I'm wearing a fragrance. And the clean tangerine is fruity and unique as a deodorant scent. I'd like to discuss the bad smell that people are complaining about and I'd like to share which scents I think smell less off-putting when 1st applying. First of all, of all 4 scents that I've tried, none of them stink after you let them DRY! I use a fan to dry the Lumē after applying and after that, there's no bad smell remaining. I don't understand why, if someone knew that it would only smell bad for like a minute or so while it dries, and then after that, it lasts for longer than any other deodorant AND you will be odor-free, why someone wouldn't just choose to endure that time of it not smelling good only while it dries, to then enjoy the lasting benefit Lumē offers! It's SO worth enduring that short time to get the amazing benefit of it. I've read that the active ingredient is what smells bad while Lumē is wet, so they have to put it in there if it's going to be an effective product. But I have to say that I don't think that the toasted coconut smells bad at all when applying. Somehow the coconut seems to neutralize any odor. The soft powder only has that odor slightly while it's wet. The clean tangerine and the unscented that I bought over a year ago (that might be the old formula that smells worse?) does have that yucky smell while wet, but it goes away when dry and then they're both great. I tell everyone about Lume; even people that I dont know, because I love it so much! I wish it was invented when I was younger, but I'm thankful it's around now. Thank you, Shannon, for making it! I really think that some people might not be having success with Lumē because they didn't get the sweat smell completely out of their clothes first. So that's something to consider here, too, when you read any negative reviews. I'm taking the time to write all of this because I believe in this product and I want other people to benefit from it, too. So, if you find it smells yucky when 1st applying, breathe through your mouth until it's dry. That's what I do with the clean tangerine and unscented. Then it's all good! Also, if you need an antiperspirant, Lumē now has a sweat control version. I like aluminum-free because I don't sweat excessively. I even saw how they now have a spray version. I'm not sure if those last 2 products are available on Amazon, but I saw them on their website, for anyone who is interested. I'm such a Lumē fan that I know my review sounds sponsored or something, but I assure you that these are all my own opinions and I haven't received anything in return for sharing my thoughts. I honestly don't feel like the product deserves bad reviews and I think the reason people wrote them is because they didn't give it a real chance, by letting it DRY before judging it and by thoroughly cleaning the sweat smell out of the clothes first. I think if they did those 2 things, there would be more happy customers. Oh, and maybe they should try the sweat control if the complaint is about wetness. I know that was long, but I really hope that helps any new customers!

Afraid of the STINK reviews? Here's THE SECRET to using this product effectively!
Afraid of the STINK many are complaining about? Okay...so I tried every single one of Lume's scents and hands down the BEST scent is the one I thought I would like the least, it's the Toasted Coconut. The other scents DO have a strange scent to them upon first application, but honestly ALL of them work, they really do. Here's the secret to using this product, RESIST the temptation to smell the cream straight out of the bottle. Just don't do it. Ewwww! You'll hate it! Instead, just ignore what your nose is telling you and put the stuff on! No! Don't smell your pits immediately! I told you not to! LOL! (I am serious don't do it!) Give it a try and trust the stuff will work and put your clothes on and get dressed. Later when you remove your clothing before bed that's the time to do your scent investigation. Or for the more adventurous among us, have someone else do the scent investigation for you. Sniff those pits or "other" places you chose to slather this stuff all over and I swear these places won't smell at all or they will have a soft lavender, coconut, or whatever scent you chose...even the non-scented one that smells downright putrefying right out of the bottle will not smell at all on your skin after wearing it awhile...instead you'll just be scent-free and smell-free. Give the underarms of your t-shirt a sniff after wearing it all day and you'll only smell lovely lavender, coconut, etc... In fact, this stuff works so well that I asked my husband to use it--on some of his other parts, and WOW holy guacamole am I a believer! ;) After THAT experience he is definitely motivated to use this stuff daily! (You just gotta reward good behavior!) LOL! Finally, to recap, DO NOT try to smell what you're looking for in a scent directly from the bottle or even right after you apply it... it needs time...seasoning for an hour or so, and then you'll be pleased as punch! Delay your need for instant fragrance gratification, modify your expectations for what scents you expect to come from the bottle and instead focus on the outcome (maybe focus on your WHY)...body odor will not occur if you use this after showering. We shower daily so I cannot comment on the 72hr nature of this body deodorant. Oh, and as far as scent choices go, I did try all of the scents and I like the way the toasted coconut mellows out to LATER, lavender mellows out nicely too so it's my second choice and for times that I don't want any scent as no scent is nice too, the unscented version is perfect (but only after time has passed on your skin...definitely a horrible smell after just applying it, but only if you stick your nose up to it. Ignore the scent at first, tell yourself it's going to be ok and let it ride... let it sit and do it's thing and it will disappear into a gorgeous UNSCENTED version. Just don't pay attention to how awful the unscented one is at first, buuuuut I promise you if you give it a few hours you won't be disappointed! I hope this helps you sift through your dilemma when you read ALL the reviews talking about the "stink"... patience grasshopper!

It Works… Just Follow the Directions
I was hesitant because of the price, but decided to try it anyway. I bought the Tangerine scent on Amazon and was impressed, so I ordered a trio from Lume’s website. Tangerine smells the best on my skin. Coconut was okay, but Soft Powder and Lavender Sage had a weird chemical smell to me. It really does work, though. Regular deodorants left me smelling like perfume mixed with B.O. which made me self-conscious. This one doesn’t. Since it’s pricey, I was determined to figure out how to use it correctly, but the directions on the bottle were too vague. I found better directions on Lume’s website: apply only a pea-sized amount to clean, completely dry skin and keep in mind that applying more is not better. Sometimes I still need to refresh, especially on humid days, but I had to do that with my usual deodorant too.

Good used in combination with Little Seed Farms
Fresh Alpine is not a neutral herbal as some have described. Be aware that it actually has a sharp, classic men’s aftershave type note that will be somewhat unpleasant if you were looking for a gentle woody, natural unisex type fragrance. I would describe it as more cologne-like and not “foresty” as others have suggested. That said, this was my first time trying Lume, and I’ve been using it for several months anyway despite the fragrance issue, because I’ve found that I do like the reduction in recurrent biofilm type BO. I had never had that issue in my life before very recently in my early 40’s, and this has helped get me back to normal even on a day that I might not use it. Whether the bacteria can build up over time or not makes a difference and the acid in this deodorant prevents it from building up. Soap doesn’t get rid of biofilm. Another pro: if you have chronic illness and sometimes can’t physically make it to the shower for a couple of days, this will last that long, except in the case of extreme heat and sweat. It’s nice to retain some humanity even while struggling. Now, let’s talk about the weird undertone smell that Lume has. I’ll give it to you straight: it has a smell that’s pretty gross right out of the bottle (separate from the fragrance). While you’re putting it on, you will smell this unpleasant odor which, honestly, is similar to when you go to a movie theater or something and a person with not great hygiene was sitting in the chair before you and *a smell* wafts up from the cushion and you end up avoiding that chair. This is the nicest way that I can describe it, but hopefully you get the drift. I’m hoping that maybe a different fragrance won’t have such a pronounced odor because the masculine sharpness of the Fresh Alpine seems to really accentuate this other stinkiness for me and I still struggle with tolerating it. However, the undertone smell (which I believe is from the active acid in the product combined with other ingredients) is less the more consistently you use it, and only lasts a few minutes after application. So, I wouldn’t apply this right next to a significant other, for instance, but if you plan to go somewhere that will take more than 5-15 minutes to get to, you’re golden. I also think the smell is worse when you first start using it, because the acid is literally disrupting the biofilm bacteria which you may not even realize you’ve got on your skin. The action of the bacteria stripping causes more of an unpleasant odor for a few minutes. Once you’ve been using it for a while, you don’t have much bacteria going on because it hasn’t gotten a chance to be there and form a biofilm. I will probably keep using Lume despite the weird odor and how expensive it is, because I like how I no longer get that sweaty fabric smell if I wear a t-shirt overnight or something. It doesn’t last quite a while. Tip: The method I’ve developed for dealing with the sour / stinky base note issue is to apply Lume and then immediately cover it with a little bit of Little Seed Farms activated charcoal paste deodorant, which comes in a lot of super nice essential oil based scents and works pretty well by itself but doesn’t last like Lume. The Little Seed activated charcoal seems to instantly neutralize the weird sour Lume smell, so I only have to deal with it for the few seconds while I’m putting it on. As an aside, I’ve found that Lume does very occasionally cause me to feel a tiny bit itchy but it usually subsides right away. But I’ve had less skin issues generally since using it, especially in that awful bra zone where my skin likes to react to sweat with a psoriasis type rash. I wish Lume would make an effort toward more eco-friendly packaging. This product is a cream and could come in a metal tube or a glass jar or even some kind of papery tube thing, potentially. Yes, plastic is convenient, but it makes me feel sad every time I buy a product that comes in a plastic container. Is it really necessary? The plastic and the weird smelly under-note are the main reasons I can’t give it a 5 star review.

Smells great and it works!
I am sold on this one! I bought Lume solid deodorant about three-five years ago and the smell was so nasty like an old lady smell in a nursing home. It stunk bad. I threw it away and thought I would never buy that nasty stuff again. I can’t remember what smell it was? Someone told me maybe lavender? Well I was told they improved the smells. Someone told me to get the peony rose one. They said that they absolutely love it. So I decided to try it because I just can’t wear deodorant and had been using nasty vinegar with the mother which it does take away the arm pit smell after a bit when it’s smell goes away. My daughter uses alcohol and she swears by that. Anyway, I gave the peony Rose a try and oh wow! The smell is fabulous and it lasts all day. I am so amazed by it. It’s expensive but a little goes a long way. I bought the tube and I like it. A little on your finger and apply it where ever you want which is nice. My armpits aren’t getting bumps and pimples like they do with other deodorants that I am allergic to. I have tried so many deodorants that I gave up and started using vinegar with its mother which does not smell that great but it does help the stink. This product now gives me confidence on not smelling bad and not breaking out so bad by wearing deodorant because I don’t want to stink. Glad I tried it again. Peony Rose is the best. I will buy it again!

It works!
This has saved me! I am allergic to so many products, that I have to waste so much money looking for the right one. Not to mention that you'll never get to use the entire solid deodorant because it falls out of the container once it gets close to the bottom. In comes this product! I chose the coconut smell due to reviews stating that it smells better as opposed to the other choice scents. So I wouldn't know how those other scents would smell. This is some pretty stinky stuff! But only for a few seconds. After that. Your golden! It works! Save's you money! No packaging mishaps! And it's a god send for travel! It literally takes up zero space and if you absolutely wanted to carry it in your purse. You could do so. But this stuff lasts I believe 72 hours! So if you forgot to put some more on. Your still good! And you only need a little. So no waste. I'm a fan for life!!!

A love/hate situation with this product
I first encountered Lume on a popular social media site. I thought their ads were cute and funny, plus I really appreciated Lume's approach to B.O. in that they're not demonizing body stink, but trying to normalize it. Let's face it, we all deal with fire pits from time to time! I went ahead and read reviews from across the internet and people's reactions to Lume seemed overwhelmingly positive on their managed social media accounts, and significantly less glowing (but still generally positive) on sites like this. I posted a couple of questions to the Lume online community, mostly in regard to the "unusual" and "rule-breaking" scent the product was purported to carry, and that's when things got a little weird. Lume cheerleaders materialized out of the woodwork and swore up and down that this stuff was going to be a life-changer. I received so many responses, actually, that I wondered if they were generated organically. The gist of it came across as such, "How dare you challenge the all-powerful Lume? Not only will it make you smell nicer, but it will make you richer, prettier, and younger!" The pushback was extreme. It was at this point that I felt I had to try out the product. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now. OMG, the smell. I've seen it compared to dried spit, rotten walnuts, butt funk, etc. Yes, Lume smells TERRIBLE out of the tube. I think it smells rather like a dirty belly button after you've been out camping in the woods for a few days with no access to a shower. The scent dissipates quickly after application, but heaven forbid you put on your bra or shirt and get some on the fabric before everything is dry because the scent WILL linger on fabric. The smell (at least in my own experience) is extremely off-putting. I went back to social media and was like, "Hey, so about this smell that y'all were insisting isn't so bad..." and the responses I received were defensive. I was accused of applying way too much product and not letting it dry properly. Lume responded by saying, "We had to break a few rules to make a product that's so effective!" Listen, "we had to break a few rules" is Lume code for, "We know it smells horrifying but we can't admit just how bad it smells because if we did, nobody would buy our product." And here's where the love/hate comes into play: Lume, just admit that for an hour after application, your product stinks! The smell is gag-inducing. That said, once the Lume stink wears off, the odor control Lume provides is good. 72 hours good? HA, no, but instead of getting out of bed stinky the next day, I wake up smelling much like I did when I went to bed the night before. The lack of antiperspirant properties has taken some getting used to, and I DO NOT recommend using Lume if you're wearing clothing that comes close to touching your now moist (but not smelly) armpits because sweat rings are not an appealing look when it comes to women's casual wear. With tank tops? Oh yeah. Sweat freely and feel the breeze on those pits; it really is quite a liberating experience. There's a place in the world (and in my medicine cabinet) for Lume. Camping trips? Working outside in the summer? Yes. I expect I'll even use it this winter when I'm not as prone to sweating, but for general daily summer wear when sweat rings are a concern, I'll stick with my regular antiperspirants. In conclusion: The product itself smells AWFUL. The smell goes away quickly (unless you get it on your clothes, in which case you'll be changing outfits unless you want the stink to linger.) Armpit stink is controlled for about 24 hours. You're probably going to be surprised how much sweat your armpits produce. Watch out for sweat rings!

It works as promised, but need to learn to use it
Summary: Positives 1. It is better for your skin than cheaper alternatives. 2. It is not expensive to use because a small amount lasts. 3. It can be effective sometimes for 2 days and sometimes for a lot more. Update: 4. Applyed it for a jock itch, now it is gone, wow. So much healthier than the medications which actually hurt your skin. Negatives 1. Applying it is a little bit involved, and can take a few minutes. 2. One needs a special solution to wash the bad smell off of fingers. 3. Though the bad smell can be managed, it is still awful to experience such bad smell while applying it. Details: I bought a tube of no scent lume. Mostly because the only scent acceptable to wear for a man: silver spruce, was out at that time. I did read reviews of the horrific smell, but wanted to try it anyway. When I did try it, it was horrific. The smell was unbearable to me. When I would apply it with my fingers, it was getting on my fingers, and my fingers smelled horrible, and the smell would not wash out with water or soap, so I stopped using it. Much later, unhappy with other deodorants, I thought to persevere, and to try it again. I found out that after applying it, you want to keep from putting the shirt on for a few minutes. This is to prevent it from soaking into your shirt. After a few minutes, several things happened: it would 1. Stop smelling horridly under my arms( not much smell at all ), 2. Dry out, so I could put my shirt on. I also found out that the horrid smell on my fingers could be washed away with a soap and a light vinegar and water solution. It all sounds pretty involved, so why is my rating 4 stars, which is a positive rating. Well, 1: alternatives are either bad for your skin or expansive. 2: on the subject of expansiveness, this product is also quite expensive. But I use the tiniest amount of it, and it does it's job well, so it actually lasts a while. 3: how well does it actually work? I found out that in the summer, when I tend to sweat more, it is effective for maybe a day and a half, possibly 2 days. But in the winter, when I don't sweat too much, it can last a week or more. I had a minor medical procedure, and could not shower for a week, and it was still working. I was rather surprised. But as soon as I washed, my BO was back as strong as ever, sorry for that imagery. So I know it was lume keeping it down. So to recount: Positives 1. It is better for your skin than cheaper alternatives. 2. It is not expensive to use. 3. It can be effective sometimes for 2 days and sometimes for a lot more. Negatives 1. Applying it is a little bit involved, and can take a few minutes. 2. One needs a special solution to wash bad smell off of fingers 3. Though the bad smell can be managed, it is still awful to experience such bad smell while applying it.

It works!
I've been using this product for a couple years now and it does exactly as promised. I have tried the different fragrances, and honestly don't care for any of them, so now I only buy the unscented. Even that one has an odd fragrance, but it disappears within a couple minutes. It does control body odor for 72 hours and this is so appreciated, especially in the summer months. It's a bit pricey for a deodorant, but I think it's worth every penny is is a product that I would definitely recommend to others.
