what size is better for a 2 and 4 year old - the 4.25oz or the 5.75oz?

We have the 5.75 oz glass set. My 9-year old rarely drains one glass, while I will refill once with dinner.I recommend the 4.25 for that reason and also because the smaller one would be better for small hands.

what size would be perfect for a casual glass of wine (like they use informally in italy)?

Well, the 4.5 ounce tumblers are a little small for the ascetic you are looking for; this size really can only comfortably hold a double-jigger's worth of liquid. The size of glass you are likely looking for--similar to what would be used in Italy for "casual" wine drinking--would be either the 5 3/4 (5-oz. being a "standard" serving of wine) or 7 3/4 tumbler glasses. Seeing as I own the 8-oz. glasses (and therefore know how small they appear to American eyes), I'd gander you would be happier with the 7 3/4 ounce glasses for that particular application.

Are these glasses stackable?

Yes, these are stackable and do not get "stuck" when stacked.

Are bottoms completely flat? Wondering if they collect water in dishwasher?

They are flat and do not collect water in the dishwasher.
