The steel cup is chrome plated for rust proof. The magnet and the steel cup form a magnetic circuit so the holding force is quadruped to 100 LBS with direct touch to a 3/4" thick low carbon steel plate. The steel cup also provides protection to the magnet so it becomes much more durable, allowing for use in more demanding applications. The outer diameter of the magnet is 3.2" (80 mm) with 0.27" (6.5 mm) center hole (for a #8 bolt). The total thickness is 0.39" (10 mm).
