My top was not in bad shape. The 3 year old car I bought must have been kept in a garage. But I was washing the car so I cleaned the top and then added the protector. It seems important to let the top dry thoroughly first before you apply the protector. I let it sit overnight. The top looked great. I think an important part of the cleaning process is to get a soft bristled brush. Some people say you could use of microfiber cloth, and I suppose that would work. The brush made it very easy. The cleaner lathers up remarkably well.
