The Casio AW81D is easily one of the best values in the Casio lineup. It perfectly balances a classic "steel" look with heavy-duty digital features. This is a great looking and functioning watch from Casio. A world time function, plus a timer and memo capability make this a helpful wrist friend. The blue dial, along with the font for the numbers, really help this watch look and feel like like something from the early 2000's, when music videos were over saturated and we all carried Motorola Razr's and LG Chocolate's. It's a fun, functional piece of nostalgia that works and frankly, will outlast an Apple Watch in it's functions as a watch. Some things to know, though. The body is plastic, the bracelet is stainless steel. This means the watch is light weight and pleasant to wear, but it is in no way a G-Shock. It doesn't offer the same rugged reliability and water resistance, so do not buy this watch and expect that you can go diving or hiking and bash this thing around and have it survive. It might, for a while, but it'll look abused quickly. The "crystal" is also plastic. It will scratch and scuff quickly if you're careless. So if keeping something looking new is a priority for you, this little watch will take some extra care to do so. The four pushers feel positive and not cheap. It's interesting to me how Casio can make so many watches out of plastic materials and still feel better made than some several hundred dollar fashion watches. There is a backlight, and it works. Two amber LED's offer illumination from the three and nine positions. It does not, however, illuminate the digital display. In a way I wish Casio would update this watch and give it better backlighting like they did with other models, and in other ways I want them to leave it be. A piece of that early 2000's charm, as it were. The bracelet is easy to adjust with proper tools (or improper. A well made #5 mechanical pencil, tweezers, and pliers can do the job). A solid fit can be achieved in a matter of minutes. Who is this watch good for? Folks who need an every day watch that doesn't break the bank, has quartz accuracy and reliability, and need either multiple timers or a world time feature. College kids, young professionals, people with lives and jobs that don't take too much toll on their stuff. People who like to have a few affordable watches they can change out with outfits. Who is this watch NOT for? Military personnel, people with rugged jobs. Runners (the bracelet CAN pull hair occasionally), cyclists, hikers, lumberjacks. People who need a timepiece to survive the worst, you should look elsewhere. This watch won't survive your lifestyle.

Nice style and made of good quality material.

I'm not a "watcher" after the invention of cell phone. My cell phone has been serving as my watch and alarm clock since then. But recently my family went overseas for a vacation and my cell phone didn't have signal there and so I needed to buy an inexpensive watch. This Casio watch serves the purpose well for being able to show dual time. I use the analog part for the local time and the digital display for my home time. Amazon says the watch is 14 mm thick. I measure it to be 12.5 for the thickest part, but it's still quite thick when I wear it. It is also of reasonable weight - not too bulky and not too light. Overall the watch looks elegant except: (1) the buttons look rather cheap and (2) I suspect the "glass" is made of plastic and after using it carefully for 3 weeks it is already showing some minor scratches. There is a slightly different version of the same watch where the wrist band is made of PVC or some plastic, but I would definitely recommend getting the stainless steel one. As most reviewers commented, the back-light is very dim. The analog dial is actually digitized too, 'cos the minute hand moves only once every 20 sec. That and the fact that it doesn't have a second hand is actually a plus to me. I can sync the analog and digital displays easily to the second. The watch has more functions that I would need. I got an open-box item for half of the regular price. So to me it is a superb deal. [2013-9-11 update] After using the watch for about 2 months a causal mistake confirms my suspicion, that is, the surface glass is made of simple plastic. I didn't know how it happened but before I knew it I noticed that there're three scratches on the surface. You get what you paid for. If you want a scratch resistant watch then prepare to pay a few times more than this low budget watch. So the scratches won't lower the star level I gave to this watch.

I have 2 other Casios, both atomic, and have had a number of other much older Casios I've eventually given to my son when I wanted a new one. All are still running fine. I got this watch since the atomic models are much more complicated to set for the various functions, and I plan to be visiting other time zones. On this watch, you can easily set the digital display to the new time zone, and display it all the time with your home time on analog. Anytime you need day, month, and date you can instantly toggle to it with one button push, then one more to go back to the digital time in the new zone. I am old and technology challenged, but found this watch relatively easy to set up and learn. I did not find it too small for a large man's wrist as did another reviewer. Nor was the band tight as another said. In fact, I had to remove one link from the band, and my arms are large. You may have to go on the internet to see the procedure to do that. If you're not good at that sort of thing you might want to see a jeweler, it shouldn't cost much....but the internet instructions are pretty good. As far as having to hold a button down for a long time to set the analog hands, since it will only advance forward, don't worry about that. Since analog time doesn't show am or pm (digital does), you will only have to go forward at most 12 hours. Also, if you push a second button while pushing the first to make the hands advance, you can then let both go and it will quickly advance on its own until you push another button to stop it. You can then advance it slowly, 20 second jumps at a time. I easily synced the analog display exactly to the digital display, setting both using one of my Casio atomics. It is a very handsome watch, and the case and band seem of very good quality, not looking cheap. You will not have to feel ashamed to wear this watch anywhere. Oh yes, the alarm is not loud, so don't expect to use it unless you are a very light sleeper.

Challenge to set but nice watch

I have worn Casio watches for decades. I've also worn Timex and other brands too. My previous watch was the Casio 10 year battery 708 MTP-3036A-2AV with the Cobalt Blue face. A quite nice heavy duty analog watch that had a full thick stainless steel case. Amazon still carried them up until earlier this year and now only carries the black faced watch by the model number MTP-3036A-1AV. I loved the old watch and it took a beating in my work but never a hiccup until the ten year battery died right at ten years. The watch was so worn I decided to look for another. The old one with a strong thick steel case at $25.00 was well worth the money. The only drawback to that watch was that it had no illumination for night viewing. Alas, it went away from Amazon even though it can still be found at other places and I may indeed go get one just because I liked it so much. But I needed a watch and liked the look of this one with a similar colored face. I won't go into great detail of the features since so many others have. I do find them fairly easy to set up and work, though that's not why I bought the watch. The greatest drawbacks to this watch is that it is made very flimsy. I guess ten years makes a lot of difference in quality. The "crystal" scratches easily so I had to take one of the clear cell phone screen protectors, cut it down and apply it to the face of the watch or it would have gotten destroyed in short order. It says the case is stainless steel. But I don't see it. The top section of the watch is a very thin pot-metal, maybe aluminum. But the worse part of the design is that the bottom side of the watch is plastic. Thin, light plastic. Ugh! That really is a let down and just won't make it for me as a work watch. So I will be buying another one of the old watches from somewhere else while it's still available and at the same time keep this watch for non-work wearing. I do like the night lights though they are not very bright like the Timex Indiglo are. One more thing. The watch ships with a huge wrist band, also made much lighter and more flimsy than the old one was. I have fairly large wrists and it was way too big for me. There are no instructions with the watch on how to reduce the size and they've changed the design on it from the old watch. But there are several good YouTube videos showing exactly how to take out links. Unfortunately, the process is simplistic but definitely not simply. It took me an hour to remove a link from both sides with needle-nose pliers and a jewelers screwdriver set. It was NOT easy. And it still was too big on my wrist. Since the clasp also has four settings to loosen or tighten the band, I set that to the tightest and it fits pretty good now though still a bit loose. Bottom line: The Casio AW81D-2AV is a very light weight, attractive watch with numerous handy features at a great price if you intend on wearing it out to dinner, church, a movie, even to the office. This watch will not hold up to a harsh work environment so be aware that it is very light weight.

The watch itself is good, but the design is flawed because it is all blue; there is no way to tell the time at dusk or in a dimly lit room like mine (I’m not a fan of direct sunlight)—the time simply won't be visible. The backlight is so weak that if you activate it at night, you only see a faint ring around the edge of the watch face—like an eclipse—but you still can't see the time. The movement is undoubtedly good—10-year battery life!—so there are no complaints there, but if you don't have great eyesight, I wouldn't recommend it. I had to return mine; if only they had added luminous hands, it would make such a difference.

A great little watch I'm pretty happy with so far, after several months. On my 7 and 1/2 inch wrist it fits very nice. It feels slightly bigger than the stated 39mm case diameter, perhaps due to the case shape. Out of the box I didn't feel the need to remove any links, but after wearing it for a while and things loosening up slightly, removing 1 link has given me a perfect fit. Pros: -Nice design, unique case and crystal shape. Very funky and retro feeling, but it does have a little style to it as well. -All the useful features: 2 regular alarms and a snooze alarm, countdown timer, stopwatch, day and date on the home screen, world time functionality, hourly chime. I can't really find a use for the telememo function in today's world of smart phone contacts, but it's a novel retro gimmick. The nice part about all the functions of this watch is that while using any of them, you can always simultaneously read the current time via the hands. They will somewhat obstruct the digital screen at specific times, but since the hands are fairly thin, you're usually able to angle the watch slightly to see what you need during these times. -10 year battery. -Comfortable and light on wrist. -Buttons large and easy to use, but hard to accidentally press. Cons: -Unlike some other Casios and Gshocks, there is no setting to MUTE this watch's beeps that occur when pressing buttons to use the functions. It is possible to silence the watch entirely, including all alarms, by opening up the caseback and finding something to obstruct the speaker spring from connecting to the watch, but this is obviously not an ideal solution, so I deal with the beeps. -I would have liked to see 100m water resistance like with the similarly priced Casio AE1200, instead of the 50m on this watch, but 50m is still fine. -As others have mentioned, since the crystal is acryllic, not mineral, and is domed, it is more prone to picking up scratches. from what I understand scratches on acryllic crystals can be buffed out using polywatch or possibly even toothpaste, but I haven't accrued any major enough scratches to want to try yet. My advice is to just be careful and try not to bump the front of the watch against anything too hard. This is a tradeoff I'm personally ok with, considering what you get is a nice retro-looking domed crystal for relatively cheap. -the backlight is not bright, but it is serviceable. In low light it does give off enough light from around the dial so you can make out both the hands, AND what is shown on the digital display, even though the digital display does not light up itself. -the lume appears pretty weak to me, especially on the numbers and dots around the dial. On the watch hands the lume is stronger, but is still only really noticeable in complete darkness, not in low light. -Like many affordable Casios, the case is of course plastic, colored to match the bracelet, which is actual stainless steel. Another acceptable tradeoff when considering the price. I would recommend watching a youtube video explaining how to set the time initially as it is a bit confusing at first, but becomes easier with practice.
