Yes...especially if he's doing an type of exercising. However, you may want check for a different product for your dad because there is a strap the is worn around the body that works with the watch to monitor the heart rate.

Q: what size is the strap

The strap is elastic, about 1 inch wide and can adjust from approximately 20 inches to 40 inches. I have a broad chest so I tried it extended all the way but this was much too loose. I kept tightening it in an attempt to keep the monitor in place but even when the elastic was fully extended and had no more stretch the monitor wouldn't stay when I pushed off the wall swimming.
