I am tossed between this one and the 12"x12". Thinking that you can cut longer strips with the 12"x12" if you move the ruler. Any input? Thx.

I used to have a fabric store and taught quilting. Please believe me, to accurately realign your fabric again is virtually impossible. It will result in some shredding at the point of realignment and an inaccurate cut for the entire strip. Fabric USUALLY comes in 44 to 45 " widths. Once folded in half, you are dealing with a width that your ruler can accommodate in one cut. If you carefully align your ruler so that it is square, you will not end up with a strip that will look like a V cut in the centre. The more times than that you fold your fabric, the higher the chances are that this will occur. The 12x12 is very useful for squaring off blocks. Hope that this is useful.

How many layers of fabric can you cut at one time?

The back of the box says it will cut 8 layers at a time.

Would this tool work for cutting rug hooking strips?

They are strips of wool usually cut in widths from 1/4" to 1/2".

How is the fabric held in place so that it doesn't slip when cutting >>

The ruler itself holds the fabric very well. You just hold the ruler as you push and slide the rotary. I always used a big quilt ruler with one of those suction handles. I now use this much more often. The one thing I found I need to watch is that I slide the rotary evenly. It can wobble about a sixteenth of inch if you don't slightly push it toward the ruler. It's not a major problem. I really love using it. I am making a very detailed travel cosmetic bag with numerous pockets (Craftsy class) and I am so glad I have this tool. I have cut multiple layers very neatly.
