Can someone describe the mouth piece? It's hard to tell how the water comes out based on the picture. Does it have a spout that pops up?

There is no straw or spout. Once you have your mouth around the mouth hole, squeeze the button on opposite side of the lid. This opens the valve from within the water bottle and allows the water to flow through as you tip up the bottle. I hope this helps!

How hard is it to clean?

Take apart the lid....it will terrify you. This is a terrible product. I took off the push button, and the spout piece that you "can't get to" and the little plastic piece across from the spout on the top 🤢 never using these again. I cleaned them with a brush but has no idea there was mold on the inside of those areas as well inside the push button area where your childs drink is passed through was solid mold and unless you pop that push button off you will not see it.

Can someone tell me the height/length of the water bottle? Just want to make sure it fits in my sons lunch box.

Are these more designed for toddlers or the early school years?

I would say ages 3 and up would be appropriate. An older 2 year old may be coordinated enough to push the button in while drinking but younger toddlers will most likely have difficulty since they're not quite coordinated enough. We started using them about 2-3 months before my children turned 3 and LOVE these cups!
