KAL Nutritional Yeast, Fine Flakes,14.8oz (420g)

I fell in love with nutritional yeast recently and have been using it regularly. It is delicious on soup and green salads! I'm also trying to get more nutrition from the foods I eat, and this fits the bill. So tasty. I cannot eat dairy and so this sort of so-called cheese replacer is umami flavor that is good for you! I like the imported, unfortified kind just because I like things in their natural state and would rather get my supplemental vitamins somewhere else. I researched and picked this brand because of it's reputation. However, I would use the fortified kind also, but maybe not long term or maybe I'd switch it up every so often. I can't tell the difference in taste between fortified and unfortified, and I love this stuff so much I sometimes just eat it by the spoonful when I am craving something tasty but don't want to eat a bunch of unnecessary calories.

This is a great way to get protein. I used to use protein powder or protein bars, but a lot of those are milk protein, soy protein, and/or wheat protein, and all of those have different problems. This is technically animal protein. The flavor is a little weird at first (I tried it on cereal, but - no way). I've found that a great way to take it is 3 tablespoons in a glass of OJ. It thickens the OJ and gives it a different flavor, but it's not really bad. I've actually grown to like it. By contrast, you can NOT put it in milk. Yuck.) I do a glass of it after the gym. This is the Brewer's Yeast, and the other food grade yeast they sell tastes a lot better, but it is fortified with over a thousand percent of the USRDA of B-Vitamins per 3 tablespoons, which actually made me break out in hives for the first time in my life. This stuff's flavor is not quite as good, but it has a more normal amount of B-Vitamins (100% or something like that). The can lasts reasonably long, since I only go to the gym once per week and I take 3 tablespoons per use. I'm not sure exactly how long it lasts but I want to say a couple months at that rate.

I bought this because it is unfortified and non-GMO. It has a great taste. Nutritional yeast from the store tastes so overpowering and a bit too tart, probably due to the added B vitamins. This variety gives a much improved flavor to food over the generic store-bought type. I have always loved it on popcorn, but this imported yeast is delicious on pasta (something that I never really warmed up to with the store bought kind) and my favorite: kale massaged with olive oil, minced garlic, S&P, maybe some fresh herbs thrown in, and then tossed in this. When I bought it from seller VitaminLife, they sent me a 14.8 ounce can instead of the 28 ounce can. When I emailed them about it they offered me a 50% refund on the item price, which I gladly accepted. I only wish I could get more of this at half off - $16 plus $6 shipping for a 14.8 ounce can is expensive. The seller has since removed their listing, as they informed me the company no longer makes the 28 ounce can. When I finish this can I will probably go onto LuckyVitamin's website and spend $50 on this and Dr. Woods soaps so I can get free shipping and stock up on those items. This seems to be the most cost effective way to buy this product currently.

I would have waited to write this review since I have not been able to try this product. Let me preface this by saying that I have used and loved KAL NUTRITIONAL YEAST and only stopped buying it because I have medical problems the require me to avoid folic acid which is added to the regular version (enriched). I was thrilled to find out that there was an imported version that is not enriched. Also I need to avoid gluten now. So I found it here and ordered what I though was a Great deal, 28 oz and Gluten-free too. Unfortunately that is not what I received. I received a 14 oz can that is not labeled gluten free. So I emailed the vender ( VitaminLife ) and they are certainly willing to let me return it and were very nice about it . They claim the manufacturer had changed this product and did not notify them. So I called KAL and left a message since it was the weekend and they were closed. When I hear from them and or when the product information and picture are corrected I will change my rating. It is still not clear if this product is gluten free or why I received a product half this size. No doubt It is delicious. 2/24/14 I did talk to KAL and they only carry 14 oz cans of this imported yeast now. Additionally this product is NOT CERTIFIED gluten free anymore. It does not have any gluten but it is also not tested! Requested that the seller corrects the product info here.

I am happy with the price and taste of this yeast. It has a mild, slightly cheesy flavor, with no bitterness. However, I selected this nutritional yeast because it’s packaged in a cardboard canister. Unfortunately, it was wrapped in a giant plastic bag that was more than twice as large as the canister. Since the canister is sealed and includes a plastic cover, the added plastic bag seems excessive. I wish Amazon and their sellers would make a more concerted effort to reduce the amount of plastic they use. In the future, I will try to find this yeast at a local health food store to avoid the plastic packaging.
