IMO this book is dated
Originally published in 2001, much of the book feels dated to me. Half the book goes by before exploration into how to create an environment that encourages creativity. I know this author has one of the most watched Ted Talks, and the references for the book are outstanding people. However, I found it unappealing. It gives a good history of people who have stood up to the established ways of church and state to give life to new ideas, but these have been well documented many times elsewhere.

Out of Our Minds: Great Read
Out of Our Minds: The Power of Being Creative is a profound exploration of creativity, education, and innovation by Sir Ken Robinson, a world-renowned expert in creativity and human development. The book is a call to rethink the way we educate, work, and engage with creativity in every aspect of our lives. It’s a compelling read for educators, business leaders, creatives, and anyone who believes that creativity is key to personal and societal growth. Insightful and Thought-Provoking One of the strongest aspects of Out of Our Minds is Robinson's ability to challenge conventional thinking. He argues convincingly that education systems worldwide are stifling creativity, treating it as secondary to academic achievement. Robinson makes the case that creativity is not just for artists but is essential for everyone, whether in business, education, or life in general. He highlights how creativity fuels innovation and problem-solving, which are critical in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world. Historical Context and Practical Relevance Robinson dives into the history of creativity and education, explaining how schools evolved to prioritize certain subjects while sidelining creative pursuits. He traces the roots of this problem to the Industrial Revolution, which shaped education systems to produce workers for industrial economies, focusing on standardization and conformity rather than individuality and creativity. In today’s knowledge-driven world, Robinson argues that this outdated system no longer serves us, making his points both timely and relevant. Engaging Storytelling and Examples Throughout the book, Robinson uses engaging stories and real-world examples to illustrate his points. From well-known innovators like Steve Jobs to lesser-known but equally inspiring stories, Robinson demonstrates how creativity can transform lives, companies, and industries. His writing is accessible and conversational, making complex ideas easy to digest and apply to one’s own life. Actionable Ideas While Out of Our Minds presents a critique of current systems, it also offers hope and actionable ideas. Robinson outlines strategies for fostering creativity in education, work environments, and personal development. He emphasizes the importance of nurturing individual talents and passions, arguing that creativity flourishes when people are encouraged to explore their unique interests. The book’s insights are particularly useful for educators looking to inspire creativity in their classrooms and leaders aiming to foster a more innovative culture in their organizations. A Call for Systemic Change At its core, Out of Our Minds is a call for systemic change in the way we think about and approach education and creativity. Robinson stresses that creativity is not a luxury but a necessity in a world that increasingly relies on innovation. He calls for a shift from rigid, one-size-fits-all educational models to more flexible, personalized approaches that recognize and develop the creative potential in every individual. Final Thoughts Out of Our Minds is a must-read for anyone interested in creativity, education reform, and personal growth. Sir Ken Robinson’s passion for creativity shines through every page, and his arguments are both convincing and inspiring. The book will challenge you to think differently about how we approach education, work, and life in general. Whether you're an educator seeking to inspire your students, a business leader looking to innovate, or someone interested in unlocking your own creative potential, this book provides the insights and tools to help you rethink what’s possible. Robinson’s message is clear: creativity is not just a skill but a powerful force that can shape the future. This book is a roadmap for anyone who believes in the power of being creative.
