testo 405i Anemometer Handheld for Air Celocity, In-Duct Airflow and Temperature – CFM Meter with Extendable up to 15" Telescopic Shaft - Wind Meter with Bluetooth and App Operation

I bought one of these Testo 405i hot-wire anemometer (basically a handheld version of the mass airflow sensor on your car engine) to measure duct air flow. After using it I liked it so much that I decided I needed a 2nd one so I can do return/supply measurements. Very handy & useful for any HVAC tech that takes their job seriously.

I'm on my second one of these. I start up industrial dust collection systems and traditionally use a pitot tube and Dwyer digital manometer. I did several duct balancing trips where I used this and the traditional pitot tube and found this to be extremely accurate and much more user friendly so I now only use this. It has a max velocity of 6,000 FPM, so while it works for traditional dust collection it does not work for high performance applications (like Negative Lift systems). Its minimum temp is somewhere around -10 degF, so it does not work in extreme winter conditions. The bulb is sensitive to buildup, but less sensitive than my collapsible pitot tube. Eventually, the bulb does bend over and even if you straighten it the readings will be incorrect. That's when its time to throw it out and get a new one. Over all, I highly recommend.

I bought this to measure traditionally low air volumes coming out of long horizontal vents (honeycombs) of refrigerated cases in grocery stores. This, as a commissioning engineer, helps me qualify if there is any blockage (ice buildups) or if a fan is out. Using it via blue-tooth on my smartphone was very easy. What I didn't like was the temperature measurement response. I was hoping it would respond quickly, but it doesn't. Measuring a refrigerated airstream (~32dF) from an environment of 70dF took about 15 minutes, before I got a consistent reading. For my job, this is much too long. So I will use the tool to measure air volumes only.

Anemometers are used to measure air speed. Many use little propellers that spin with airflow, but if you need to measure airflow inside of an enclosed space Testo 405i is what you need. Place the Testo measurement probe thru a small hole and air speed is simple. Very easy to use and good value for the design

Used this on a very important project where they were low on cfm after i changed the configuration my report was within 2 cfm of the tab contractors device love it super easy and accurate MUST HAVE FOR HVAC AND TAB PRO’S

I use this to check the air flow in my HVAC system to determine when air filters need to be replaced. The bluetooth connection and the app work great. (Retired HVAC geek.🙂)
