Does this wash cleanly off of cloth diaper inserts?

No-this is not meant for cloth diapers. It does not wash off. I use this for my disposable overnight (12-hour) diapers, but daytime cloth diapers I use Grandma El's.

Looking for a very thick (so it doesn't come off) fragrance free paste (desitin is too thin) is this it?

I've used both Desitin and this butt paste.  The consistency of this butt paste seems very dependent upon temperature.  After bringing it home from the pharmacy, just the short ride in a semi-warm car, about 5 miles, I tried to use this butt paste immediately.  It came out almost like flowing oil, with some blobs of denser paste mixed in.  I was very disappointed.  But, after being in our house for a few hours, at 70 degrees F, it cooled down and was the consistency of soft, smooth peanut butter when first squeezed out of the tube, and could hold up under gravity until you get about 3/4 of an inch length of it squeezed out, then it would start to bend.  Every time you change a diaper, I think what you will find, is that the temperature of your babies body will have caused this paste to basically melt, and it will be somewhat absorbed into the diaper fabric.  Regardless of all of that, this is the stuff that we have found that works for our babies.   I think you will find with most oils, pastes, greases, etc, that the temperature of your babies body will cause it to somewhat liquefy and be adsorbed into the diaper fabric, so looking for something that doesn't come off is probably not going to happen unless you go for the industrial greases for machinery with higher melting points, that would probably have other ingredients that are not be good for a babies skin.

How's this for chafing and what's the scent?

A little bit goes a long way, since it is thick. It has a scent but kind of neutral, maybe like a hand-cream, but definitely not perfumey, since I know that would bother me, and this scent does not. It works very well for any skin irritation, including chaffing, but I also use it on wounds for its antiseptic quality, since it essentially is zinc oxide. Takes the sting out of insect bites too, I found. Great product, for any skin irritation, and I always keep some on hand.

Is this basically the same thing as Aquaphor?

No, Aquaphor is a clear lotion type ointment. This is for bed sores and works very well.
