Feels good, smells good!
I bought the twin XL size. I'm 5'5" and weigh 220lbs. I'm surprised at how long and wide the twin XL size is, in a good way! It's not HUGE or even close to being full or queen size but even for my body, the twin XL is very generous and I have plenty of room to lay down and stretch out. As others have stated, there is a strong smell of wilderness. Imagine the scent of grass you get when you visit the zoo, that's basically it. But, in my opinion, it's a comforting and soothing scent! I don't mean to say it smells like feces-flinging monkeys, it's just a strong scent of rush grass so be prepared for that. The tatami mat is on the thin side but that suits me just fine because I plan on folding this up every morning when I awake so the less space it takes up, the better. It folds nicely and the only reason it gets 4 stars for sturdiness is because the three sections are held together with looped string (albeit, a lot of it) but I can only hope it holds up over time. It just looks like something that a person who is rough will be able to demolish if they don't fold/treat this tatami mat properly and gently. Despite being thin, it actually is more comfortable to lay directly on this compared to lying directly on my carpeted floor. I can't wait to get my FULI twin XL mattress this weekend so I can place on top of this tatami mat!

Exactly what we wanted!
This is our second tatami mat purchase from this company and we are more than happy with the mats. They are beautiful and very comfortable to lay and sit on. A good sturdy thickness and well designed. Our cats even love to lay on them. The mats are easy to was and vacuum, and easy to take apart and rearrange into various shapes to fit your room. The mats are thick and cushioned, and have a nice grassy smell to them that we find relaxing. I suggest keeping it cleaned and spraying it with a dust mite killer from time to time, as dust mites enjoy tatami mats. Overall, great product and purchase, would definitely recommend.

โ โ โ โ โ Smells like Japan, not rabbit food.
I saw someone leave a 1-star review saying this tatami mat โsmells like rabbit food.โ Have youโฆ never been to Japan? Let me clarify ๏ผ while this isnโt the most โauthenticโ hand-woven tatami in the world, itโs extremely well made for the price. The scent is exactly what youโd expect from real tatami ๏ผ earthy, clean, and very nostalgic if youโve ever stayed in a Japanese ryokan or hot spring resort (like Gora Kadan). I actually love the scent โ it brings a real sense of calm and zen to my space. The quality is solid, the surface is comfortable, and it fits beautifully in my minimalist room. Iโm honestly super happy with this purchase.

Where Was This Futon Mat All My Life?
Ever since a trip to South Korea when I was 20 years old in 1979 I have primarily slept on futon mattresses all my adult life ( I'm 64 now ), in a variety of sizes, materials, and thickness. I recently purchased a FULI single size mattress for a guest room ( great! -- I'll write a separate review of that ) and I decided to go with the recommended Tatami mat as recommended. This is by far the best futon combo I have ever slept on. I sleep so well lately. The futon is thin but comfortable and the Tatami mat underneath on a wood floor just makes it more so. The futon/mat combo folds up nicely without any fuss and sets up in a minute. I'm occupying the guest room now! Guests will have to sleep on my old futon ( smile ).

Ultimately seems worth it, even for us bigger folk
This review covers this tatami and the companion Twin Fuli mattress. As such, this review will be posted in the mattress link as well. /futon combo 2/3 week review. Week one: Fell asleep easily, woke up often. Tatami is 3-panel folder. I notice the top/middle seam sometimes depending on how I hit it, and it can wake me up. Some hip soreness from where my weight settles on my hips on the setup. Week two: Hip soreness intensifies. Tried various ideas to help avoid that problem, but problem persists. Joel more stubborn so. . . Week three: very slight hip pain now. Hardly waking up. Infrequent Princess and the Pea moments. If I'd do anything different, it'd be to get a single panel tatami. I am averaging 230, 5'10" (maybe still 11" idk), 42.7 years of age. Perhaps I am blessed to be able to get up and down into that position. But I am adjusting quite well. And I believe this combo can work for anyone. Back pain no longer exists. I wake up, I get out of the tatami, I stand up, I don't feel as groggy. I want to get out of bed, not suffer in it. Tatami kicks my ass out of bed. Not because I am uncomfortable, but because my body somehow seems to realize now that bed is a part of my life, not my actual life. There's a lot more going on there that I cannot explain because I am just a mere, often self-absorbed mortal. But I kid you not. I'd rather have minor tenderness on my hip bones than to feel like my back is collapsing in on itself, as I had on several super firm mattress configurations. My setups over the last five years: 1) up till recently, some form of cheap memory foam mattress (or sometimes more expensive) on a frame. 2) #1 on the floor 3) thin mats on the floor 4) cot/mat combo, horrible horrible 5) tatami/futon #5 wins for me. Never truly appreciated the floor experience until I did what the Japanese and others have done forever and ever it seems. I could pack up my rig and travel with it if I want. The entire setup weighs about 15 pounds and collapses in on itself in a 3x3 square (or thereabouts).

A splendid piece
Itโs just what I imagined it to be and Iโm using it very often. Itโs very comfortable if you use it with a futon. Itโs easy to use and store. Been having good night sleep after using this for sometime. Just make sure you eat it from time to time and keep it away from humidity. It will take you sometime before itโs natural smell goes away, but you can speed up the process by Wiping it with a lightly damp cloth, and a few drops of tea tree oil

Solid, well-made and easy to use and store.
I have used this mat every day for the last two years, in combination with a bamboo-cloth memory foam mattress. Together on the floor feels like sleeping on a real bed. The rush grass mattress wicks moisture away from the mattress, and from the sleeper, very effectively - I can see how much moisture is collected on my wood floor. The mat, just like the mattress, can be folded into three during the day, and it dries off quickly and thoroughly. It is well made, firmly bound together and I can see no signs of wear or flattening. The stitching between the three panels is very very thorough indeed. Together with the 3-fold mattress above it, this mat has revolutionised my living, freeing up loads of space in my small house and offering a very comfortable low-cost solution,

DURABLE
worth your money. Itโs strong . I even used it during camping and I did not feel the rocks. Foldable but not fragile. You know itโs good quality when you see it. I have it face the sun at least once a week although the instructions say once a month I think. Itโs just me being overly zealous.

Very good product
Very good quality product. After two weeks of using it - still smells as grass which is nice and calming. Folds nicely. Easy to clean. Not the cheapest bust worth the money in my opinion.
