Whilst this book is beautiful and insightful, it was a difficult read for me, as a late diagnosed woman, who now also has an autistic daughter slightly younger than Tally. The feelings of rejection and confusion by her friends really bought up a lot of feelings. When she writes that she hides at lunch with no friends to be with - it just took me straight back to school. When she’s talking to the dog about how he needs to be ‘normal’ - I actually welled up. This book is incredible and will stay with me for a long time - but I won’t be letting my daughter read it until she’s much older. This would be better for teens I think. I didn’t find it uplifting or hopeful. I found it filled with anxiety and upset - which is useful to explain to others how ‘we’ can feel - but it’s not the message I want to portray to my daughter, for now at least. Maybe when she’s older and more able to understand.

I bought this for my 12 year old autistic daughter so that she could feel like som comradeship, and like she’s not the only one going through some of the things she goes through, but she’s in love with graphic novels right now and there are “too many words and not enough pictures” for her right now. So I thought I’d read it until she’s ready to. I totally recommend it!! It’s so great!!! As a parent who’s going through some of these experiences (purely as a spectator, which I know is not the same) I found some camaraderie with in the pages, which is what I was hoping for my daughter when I bought it. But I think that it is an exceptional window into a world that most neurotypical people don’t get to experience. There’s no way I can rate this book as an autistic person. If you’re a parent of an autistic child it’ll give you a few extra insights, but if you’re a teacher, grandparent, aunt, uncle, bus driver. librarian, ect…. that comes in contact with autistics on a fairly regular basis and your looking for insight and even if your not looking for it, you’ll benefit from reading this book.

"For Mum. Thank you for understanding me and helping to understand myself. This book is also dedicated to every girl that feels like she doesn't fit in - stand out and be brave!" from Libby Scott. With a dedication like this, what more can be said? This book is just what every preteen needs to read who is struggling during those awkward middle school years. This book is inspired by young coauthor Libby Scott's own experiences with autism, this is an honest and moving middle-school story of friends, family, and finding one's place. Join Tally as she deals with all the overwhelming emotions of starting 6th grade. So many great takeaways through out the book! Like this list Libby puts on the fridge for mum & dad. "What every parent should know about raising an Autistic child. DO try to adjust to their needs. Pick your battles. DON'T join in if there is an argument. Calm it down & offer them a way out of it. DON'T tell them they are different. Tell them they are unique. DO let them know how much you love them. You can never give your child enough love. DO accept their difficulties & find ways to turn them into positives. DON'T tell them to make eye contact, as find this overwhelming. DON'T put direct demands on them. They may instinctively avoid them. DO say exactly what you mean. Never use metaphors or be sarcastic. CUT the lables out of everything they wear."
