What makes the scent work if there is not a bulb to heat it up

It uses some other electro heat source besides a light bulb. I have never taken one apart and examined it to know specifically. Perhaps you should contact the manufacturer and ask this question :)

How long do they last

The case should last for a long time, years. The fragrance a month or more if it is plugged in all the time. Never timed it.
