which one is c and which one is d they are not marked. I am assuming, as a beginner, that the d is the shorter one...is that correct?

Yes the short one is pitched in "D" and the longer one is pitched "C". There's marking on the barrel of whistle saying what the key is for each one.

If I order just the D does it come with a case?

I thought these two came as a set? The case is actually nice than expected. It's not just a flimsy fabric. It's kind of like a smaller version of a drum stick bag and it has a quality zipper too. Very nice. ~JSV

Are these good for performance? I'm looking for a whistle that doesn't take so much air, and is louder than my little metal Clark whistle.

I'm going to offer a no for this answer. These whistles have a problematic scale that makes the G (top three fingers down) different in tone from other notes, and with harsher overtones. This problem continues into the upper half of the upper octave, requiring particularly harder blowing, and producing harsher notes that are not a match for the sound of the rest of the scale. There are plenty of whistles that don't have these quirks and problems. For performance, and just for having a good sound when you practice and not having to fight the instrument, I'd save for a significantly better whistle.
