Great value! I watched a lot of videos about this before purchasing it. The reviews are great. I've always a hollow body guitar like this but didn't want to spend a fortune on one. This thing showed up looking great, beautiful guitar, cool head stock. Out of the box, the action was very good less than 2mm so I had to adjust that a tad higher to stop some string buzz but after that it plays great. However, you gotta consider than any high end guitar also needs setup as well. I have higher end guitars that weren't set up this well from the factory. The sound is excellent. Durability will be seen over time I can't comment on that quite yet because I just got it but overall I am impressed. With tax, I have less than $200 in this guitar. It's beautiful, had a proud headstock, and is a welcome addition to my collection. I will likely purchase another Grote in a different style just to see if the quality is the same because I anticipate that the price will continue to climb over time on these.

I was very Skeptical even about ordering it, but I pulled the trigger and it arrived one week later. It was delivered and it was in a flimsy cardboard triangular shaped box. My immediate response upon seeing it was "Just great, look at that $#!t". My curiosity got the best of me so I picked it up and took it to my room. I was expecting the worse because I judged it by its (cardboard) cover. I was expecting to ship it right back to Amazon because of a hundred reasons I would find. So after thinking of what I was gonna write in the description of why I was returning it, I just opened it as fast as I could just like peeling off a band-aid. I removed the thin poly bag that it was in, I eyeballed like if I was buying a 6k Gibson Custom Shop Explorer and low and behold this $200.00 guitar looked pretty amazing, compared to most brands of the same style . Looks is one thing but it really looked great, the binding ,the finish the chrome, it was really a quality build except for the cheap plastic pickgard. So I put a strap on it & tuned it. I quickly noticed it was balanced quite well, I adjusted the strap up high ala Roy Orbison style and then low like that dude from the foo foo fighters and like I said it was well balanced so I plugged it into two amps. first a solid state amp which make just about any guitar sound good... I was impressed that for being a large semi-hollow body design that I could actually reach past the 15th fret with ease. I SAID DANG GUM once again as I was ripping past the 15th fret all the way up to the mid 20's I saw myself onstage, stobe lights flashing, fog machines pumping smoke and lazer lights blinding you and pretty ladies showing their hearts. And then I switched to my tube amp with Alnico speakers and this freakin Grote 335 in tobacco style finish sounded even better.. From smooth jazzy clean to Ted Nugent style hard rock. This guitar was able to handle it. I've had it about 2 months and the only complaint I got is the tunning keys, but I figured hey what the funk If I wanted it for a daily rig or a performer I would do the upgrade. but for now I put it in front of my 5 other Gibson LP's and American Fender strats.. As most of you already know no two guitars sound the same and mine could be that Unicorn but you'll never know untill you play one or two. I would recommend this for newbies to the hardened seasoned pro just maybe you might get inspired and play your heart out like I do even if it's in my head.

I’m not sure what got me interested in a 335 style guitar. I think it was a video review of the Sire H7 that originally caught my eye, then sent me down the road of comparing all of the more affordable 335’s out there. I watched a bunch of reviews for the Sire, Ibanez, Firefly’s, and the Grote. I was convinced that anyone of them could be a good purchase, but the Grote was the least expensive, with pretty much all positive reviews. Based on those reviews, what I was expecting was a decently made guitar that was poorly packaged, would need new tuners, immediately need new strings, a fret polish, and set up. All things I’m capable of doing myself, and actually enjoying tinkering with so, for $185, I thought this could be a fun project guitar to mod and work on. What I got was a well packaged guitar, with perfect fit and finish. I looked at every inch of this thing looking for flaws in the binding or clear coat. Once I tuned it up I was surprised that the strings were actually pretty good. The frets were nicely polished with rolled edges, feeling like a high end premium instrument. The tuners aren’t bad, and there’s no need to hurry up and replace them, though I had ordered a replacement set with the guitar, expecting them to need immediate replacement. The set up out of the box was perfect. I checked for buzz at every fret, none. I didn’t measure the neck relief or string height, since they were both to my liking. I Checked the intonation, spot on. Checked the nut the way Phil McNight does, and it was perfect. So now that the build and set up passed, it was time to play. Before I ever plugged it in, once I started playing it, I couldn’t stop. The neck, which some have described as chunky, just felt perfect in my hand. I definitely wouldn’t describe it as chunky myself. A little fuller than a Strat neck, but in no way a negative. For me, the feel of the neck is everything. If it doesn’t feel good, nothing else can compensate for that. Plugged in, it’s just as impressive. I’m the opposite of a tone snob, so I don’t have the vocabulary to describe the nuances of the pick ups, and I don’t have an impressive rig to play through. What I can say is, from clean to dirty and in between, it sounds great to my ears. It was easy to get the iconic jazzy tone, and just as easy to get it to rock. I’m in no way a guitar expert as a player or a tech, but in my 30 years of playing, mostly as a hobbyist with a little gigging experience, I can’t say enough about how impressed I am with this guitar. I’ve played mostly Strat style guitars, Squiers, a MM Sterling, PRS SE Silver Sky, PRS SE 24, to name a few. I even had a cool Chibson Scotty Moore for a while, which gave me my first taste of the shorter scale. This guitar is definitely on par with all of these, and at a fraction of the cost of any of them. Hats off to Grote for being able to offer something this good at such an affordable price point.

Rarely do I review products but I feel compelled to this time. Like a lot of others who have given reviews, I am amazed at the professional quality of this guitar at this price point. I also have been playing guitar for 25 years and my most expensive guitar is a PRS Custom SE 24 (retails around $849 at Guitar Center). I love my PRS but I learned on a guitar that was basically this GROTE guitar. However, the brand I had at the time was ‘Jay Turser’, also a semi-hollow body in a slightly deeper wine red (that guitar played/served me well for about 10 years playing out until it broke beyond repair). BACK THEN (1998?) I paid $350 for that guitar and have been through many guitars since. I always wanted to get that Jay Turser back so I found GROTE and I'm so glad I did. I do have some technical knowledge of how guitars work so I was able to set this guitar up, but I also did such LITTLE adjustment that anyone with a little patience could do it. It came packaged perfectly with no damage whatsoever. The neck was straight as an arrow (which is a great place to begin from to create a slight up-bow but honestly, I didn't bother with a truss rod adjustment!) The straight neck also created a lot of buzz which after tuning up, was (mostly) solved by lifting up the saddle (turning both turning wheels left with strings de-tuned). I stretched the stock strings over and over until I had good tuning stability and MAN! This guitar plays like a dream! No issues with electronics or finish or…anything (okay it's a little neck heavy but what more can you ask for for this price?!) Fantastic tone! It's beautiful! In short, there are more adjustments I can do to make her even better but for now, I'm hooked on this guitar plugged or unplugged! Get it. Buy a case! Take good care of it. You won't regret it.

All I can say is WOW, WOW,WOW. I collect high end guitars, some custom shop guitars as well as vintage gibsons and vintage amps. Been playing for 46 years...And yes Im a tone snob. For a "Players" guitar this is a deal of the century...I would say in all honesty it compares equally to an Epiphone Es-335...which last time I checked was around $1,100. Possibly made in the same factory but with slightly different specs. (I noticed the dot inlays on the side of the neck are smaller than a gibson / epiphone, and the frets are slightly smaller.) Upon arrival I plugged it into my 1972 Fender Quad-Verb, expecting the pickups to sound like garbage...what a pleasant surprise! They truly do sound like stock epiphone pickups!! I heard they are Korean made pickups. I have a couple of Gibson Burstbuckers off of my custom shop les paul that I was going to throw in there, but honestly I would say these pickups are 85% there, so I might leave them in. Only complaint, there is one high fret on the bass strings on the 15th fret, and its fretting out - so it needs some setup work (Heck, my Gibson Custom Shop '58 Les Paul needed a good setup also!!). Steel frets too! The only other steel fretted guitar I have is a $7,000 Warrior Dran Micheal. The action was surprisingly low, and the relief was spot on for a low action guitar. Even the nut is properly cut at the proper level for relief. The finish is about what you'll find on a decent epiphone - not bad at all! Fit and finish I would say is again, maybe 80-85% of a Gibson. No cheap wood here either, looks like actual maple neck and body - the fingerboard has a rosewood like grain, but its darker so it must be another similar wood. I pulled back on the neck and strummed an open G chord to see if it would flex like some crappy guitars do, but it was VERY stable, so i'm really thinking it is hard rock maple. The hardware - tuners, ABR bridge and stop tailpiece are decent quality, like what you'll find on an epiphone. The body has the contours of a true ES-335. I have no idea how they pulled this off, I put my bias aside and decided to buy it for yucks - So good that I ordered one for my adult son also - for less than $200 how can you go wrong?? IM SUPER IMPRESSED. If your'e reading this and your'e a tone snob like I am, try it out. For the price of a decent pedal, this guitar will absolutely surprise you. If you're going to buy an Epiphone at $1,100...buy this guitar, and invest the other $900 in a quality tube amp like a marshall or a Fender, Seriously!

The prime days price was 189,I got 1 in good condition used for 150.it had the bridge ,tailpiece completely low to the body,and buzzed out. The nut was cut perfectly, and even angled on the backside towards the tuners.the stainless frets were smooth a few have grit marks , but no major issues all seated flat and ends are dressed well.the bridge had 1 screw that was tight to turn for intonation w no tension, so it may have been move while under tension, but it adjusted well enough to intonate correctly, so I am not concerned. After string height I adjusted and tuned each string and intonation of te 12th fret matching notes and this guitsr had a very slight neck relief when I checked w the capo on 1st and finger on 22nd I look at the gap in middle of neck and it was nearly nothing less than 10 thousands. The cowboy chords are easy and fast and the bridge raised fixed the buzz out and all strings play well now I. Tune w nut lube at the nut and saddle its solid and stable to play..it sounds great, and is what I was hoping a 335 copy would add to my hobby.

TLDR: This guitar looks great, was set up well enough out of the box that I didn't have to adjust it, and is engineered to have the correct tonal quality. I gave $179 for this guitar. I had watched multiple reviews on YT as well as read reviews here. I was looking for a semi hollow 335 style guitar and bought this one because I liked the aesthetic, and it was cheap enough I could upgrade the electronics if needed. I bought this mainly for use in studio/recording so I can't say anything about live/stage performance. I looked this guitar over and can't really find anything aesthetically wrong with it. It really looks great. The burst was done well, the finish looks good, the wood grain looks good. I expected to spend a while dressing fret ends, adjusting intonation, etc. But mine was absolutely playable right out of the box. I will make some intonation adjustments on 3 strings but it is really good enough as is. It sounds the way I want this style of guitar to sound...warm and woody. The tone and volume pots have good taper and response from 0 through 10. It also plays true to style. I don't review many items, but I was so impressed with this guitar I had to write a review. Keep in mind at this price point there is probably a large spread in quality. So you may have to tweak the setup, etc. However all of the necessary components are there for this to be a great value for anyone at this price point. I wish guitars of this quality would have been available at this price when I started playing 30 years ago. This is a great guitar, but I would not recommend as a first guitar due to the style guitar and size of the neck. The neck is true to style and is a D shape. Also, this guitar has a large body.
