There is a momentary pause between each "shush" so it is not a continuous sound like the hair dryer. When my baby is really upset, nothing is as effective as the hair dryer. Period. But the shusher is obviously more convenient--no cord, no blowing air, etc. I like the shusher but at this point, I use the HoMedics Sound Spa on the Go even more--the white noise function can be turned up loud and it's small enough to go with us anywhere. Plus, unlike the shusher, I can attach it to her car seat. And it's 1/3 the price. Just my two cents... **Q: is it worth $35??** A: No, we returned it as soon as I realized there are many apps for shushing that work even better without costing a whopping $35. It is as if, after a few seconds, it recognizes that it will not be able to hear anything anyways, so it just shuts down, and this alleviates the tension for the mind. It is like, "since we wouldn't hear it anyways, why worry". I could be wrong, but I really believe it. It is like rain, but they're we think that we can't hear anything coming, but there likely isn't anything coming in this mess, anyways! It maybe that the brain tries to find resonance with the sound as well.
