Highly recommend G-Drives
This was expensive but I've used a G-Drive before and knew I would love it. I purchased this 4T version for my new cylinder Mac Pro which came with virtually no storage space on board. The small SSD embedded is for system use mostly and for holding small downloads.I don't use this as my only external drive, despite being a fast 7200 speed. It's great for a hard drive, but I mostly use SSDs, which are much faster. Those get really expensive so I wanted to add one of these as part of my storage. This is nice as it comes with a Thunderbolt connection, but unfortunately it won't daisy chain with my other Thunderbolt drives.I need a lot of storage as I shoot, produce, and edit videos, shoot photography, and make/produce my own music. That requires a lot of space, but having used a 1T G-Drive in the past, I know the quality I'm getting.Leave this on your desk as it isn't very portable. Get a Western Digital "My Passport Ultra" with a good case for portability. Another situation where I learned my lesson the hard way.I had a 1T G Drive that I used to my previous Mac to the beach with me while on vacation. While unpacking, I put the G-Drive on the floor. My dog took her chance and wet on it, destroying it. I tried everything I could think of to revive it, but it was a goner. I finally recycled it yesterday, months later. So, my lesson that I learned is that it's not portable, but it's reliable. It has it's own power source. Keep it on your desk. It will look pretty. ;-)You get a great, fast hard drive for the price. 4T is nothing to sneeze at.

G-TECH 10TB BACKUP DRIVE CLEAN SMOOTH INSTALL-NO PROBLEMS
I had to upgrade my 2011 iMac and 2017 ext hd 3tb. everything was slow and iOS needed to be upgraded too. I purchased new iMac 27 3.7ghz using my ext hd that gets hot and noisy and very slow to copy. Apple Tech support recommend a new drive to for clean smooth install. I went to my 1st choice suppler Amazon and checked reviews. Found some 1 and some 5 start reviews, usually overheating concerns others out of box failures/not startup. I wanted 6TB but it did not have open frame/base for cooling so I broke the bank and went for the 10TB. No regrets, next day delivery, install (connected power and computer) powered up and began preparing to copy onto the new drive and told me a new drive was connected. Yes. Started immediately to copy/save backup with no interruptions, quieter than previous eq. My heavy data in docs, jpegs, pdf files copied clean and smooth to the end. Took about 8-10 hrs but afterward time machine copies really quickly and with little noise. Thankyou Amazon for quick delivery and G-Tech my top choice for high performance and thunderbolt speed. Only negative, had to put a strip of painters tape over the lamp which flickers and can be annoying. A VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER.

Waste of nearly $500. Doesn't work at all - missed 2 week return window
I bought two of these. First one worked fine but I didn't need the second one for my video project until more than a month later. When I tried to use it, it was "unreadable buy this computer." After trying may tricks to get it to work, I could copy one item and then it self ejected and I cannot get it to mount (be "readable") again no matter what I do. I didn't realize I should have tried it out within the few week window after purchase (only had 2 weeks since didn't arrive until 2-3 weeks after purchase and all that time counted), so now I have a $500 paperweight. Finally found way to contact seller who said they won't take it back or replace it and I need to contact company for warranty. That was a major hassle, since original company bought by new company and getting any help from either was nearly impossible. After lots of hassle, finally they agreed to cover it under warranty, but here is the deal: I return something BRAND NEW that doesn't work. I have to pay for packing and shipping and then they will return a used, reconditioned product to me instead of a new drive. More money and no satisfaction!!!!

So far so good
I have only backed up once using this G drive so far and it went very smoothly.I will say I was very concerned about the drive being dead on arrival, so I plugged it in to check it. Guess what! "Dead"! — or so I thought. It turns out the drive must be plugged into your computer AND be plugged into a power source. It will not power on without being connected to your computer. I am wondering how many other people have made this simple mistake. As for cases to put the drive in. I wish Amazon would offer up suggestions, but no one makes a case specifically for this. I found a couple case that ought to fit. I was concerned about having enough padding, but they are all about the same (skimpy). I am using the BAGSMART travel cable organizer, and the drive fits with room for the cords along side it. There is still enough room to add some other cords, but I have other cases holding those already. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071S722C9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1The other product very similar to the BAGSMART and essentially the same dimension, but in more extreme (fun) colors is: https://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Organizer-Vivefox-Double-Accessories/dp/B07K6G6J5W/ref=pd_ybh_a_19?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=7MK63C1QTVPY4APH2JQN
