Great buy, hurry before they run out or the price increases
~~~~~Update: After one year, this knife is still going strong. Use it daily and it has not loosened up in any way. Edge retention is right where it should be with this type of steel. I have finally "mastered" sharpening this knife with a ceramic rod and a leather strop infused with green polishing compound. I have purchased 5 so far as gifts and will be buying a few more for reserve and probably gift some more. The look is very "cool" but beyond that, the knife is very good. Materials are top rate and the finish is outstanding. Handle: though it is made of smooth stainless steel, when gripped in the hand, the design is such that you do grip it, it does not feel as if it is going to slip out of my hand. Blade: the jimping at the heel of the blade provides good traction. It came very sharp: sliced through paper with no tearing or catching. I have not had to sharpen it yet. If the steel is 8Cr13Mov, then getting an edge back when needed should not be a problem. It is quality steel that has good stain resistance and is relatively easy to sharpen and keeping it. Thumb Studs: I can actually open this using them. I have medium sized hands and this is one of the few knives that I can do this without my thumb ending up being touched by the blade. Clip: not a big user of clips but the one supplied is just right as far as flexibility goes. I can attach it to my pocket with one hand and a few fingers! Clip can only be worn as it comes with the knife. The tip up or down is not a factor for me. LASTLY MY RANT: Many critical reviews are from knife aficionados. They require the best steel, the designers name to be known. They each have their "guy" whom they admire to the point of worship. Made in China is a phrase which is evil. Yet they own TVs, cell phones, other electronics that are made in China. Everything is made in China. Why are we singling out knives as POS? because they are made in China? Bad steel is a thing of the past. 90% of buyers have no need for "super steels" and are often no more than a bragging point. For the rest of us, we want a quality blade where I am not paying for the name of the knife designer.
value for style is exceptional, the steel less so.
"classic design", great pocket clip, excellent lock-up from the frame lock, nice useful jimping on the spine, and a good size. The blade steel is distinctly mediocre, but sharpens easily because of that. Really solid weight in the hand, but slim and light enough to carry comfortably. Excellent value for money on a classy knife!
Seriously, for the price, the Sanrenmu 710 can't be beat
I was impressed with this knife, but I can't give it as thorough of a review as I might like because I gave it to a friend who was deploying and needed a good pocket knife, and he really liked this one. I bought this knife because it was cheap, well reviewed, and because I am never going to be able to afford a real Sebenza, but I wanted to get an idea of what one might feel like without buying a fake. The Sanrenmu 710 is obviously modeled on the Sebenza, but is different enough that I could feel like I had a poor man's Sebenza without feeling like I was buying a knockoff. The fit and finish on this knife is really surprisingly good for the price. Like shockingly good. Everything about this knife speaks to doing the best possible on a budget. Right down to the pocket clip. The pocket clip is obviously not as pretty as the CRK Sebenza that the ergonomics are modeled on (the clip is also tip down unlike the Sebenza), but the clip is more aesthetically pleasing than it needed to be, and worked well. The washers are one bronze one teflon, which was a little strange to me, but fine. The opening was not terribly smooth out of the box, but the advantage of the bronze washer became clear as it got a lot smoother as I worked it. The jimping on the blade is excellent. Very effective and grippy, but not thumb shreddingly so. I want to stress this, because it was this feature in particular that aided the ergonomics that really impressed the friend I gave this to. The blade came sharp, but not shaving sharp. I didn't use this knife as much as I would have liked because I was in the process of reviewing a different knife, but I will buy another one of these to review because I really liked it. It's like a feather in the pocket and feels nice in the hand. A little small, but more than adequate for a little gentleman's folder on the cheap.
Seems to be an excellent little knife
I have heard of these knives for some time. Most everyone who had experience with it found it to be exceptional for the price and a very good knife overall. So I finally bought one and I agree, it's probably the best bargain knife available even though it now costs $13 (Amazon prices vary, so this may not be true when you read this). It's a "tribute" knife, copying the Chris Reeves Sebenza. The Sebenza has a reputation among the knife knowledgeable as something of the Holy Grail of blades. It's extremely expensive and very well made of premium materials. I finally bought a Small Sebenza and I can attest it is a fine little pocket knife, but the world is full of fine little knives. If function is the main criteria for buying a knife, the Sanrenmu will be sufficient. If pride in ownership and appreciation of material and workmanship and impressively close manufacturing tolerances is important, the Sebenza is the winner. The only thing I don't like about this knife is that the pocket clip is not changeable. You can only carry it tip down and my preference is tip up. It's not a deal breaker since it's small enough to carry in your pocket without using the clip. My knife has a good finish, smooth operation and as perfect fit as you could ask for. The frame lock snaps into place solidly. The blade is standard Chinese upper quality steel: 8Cr13MoV. Many knife lovers disparage this steel because it's not one of the super steels that sends them into effusive rapture. Personally, I figure if it works, it works. This steel works well. It's pretty easy to get a good edge and the edge holds okay--nothing spectacular but good enough for most of the tasks most of us will use it for. The SanRenMu came fairly sharp and a little time on the Sharpmaker with the fine and ultra fine stones got it in the razor category. The 8Cr steel is good to go. Overall, a great little knife. It's not a real Sebenza but it's a perfectly good little pocket knife and I like it.
How do they make money on this?
As other reviewers have stated, the value on this knife is ridiculous. I got way more knife than i paid for. The fit and finish on this is as good as any $50-$100 knife I own. I own a plethora of blades in that price range and now i feel like i overpaid for all of them. No youre not getting a supersteel or great materials but youre getting a well made knife for around 10 bucks that will do anything normal people do with a small edc knife. Pros: Fit and finish very very good for a cheap Chinese knife. About what you see on a chinese spyderco. (tenacious} Edge came out of box razor sharp. Sharper than any chinese knife i own (tenacious persistence cryo). Lockup is excellent with no blade play. Blade centering is dead on. Pocket clip very usable . No complaints. Smooth deployment with thumb studs. Flicks open hard and fast and locks up tight. Cons: Slightly dirty out of box. Some lube seeping around the pivot. I took a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and got in all the crevices and got alot of nasty black residue out. Cleaned up great tho. And if thats a problem with you go spend 100 bucks on a different/better knife. Detent is a tad tight. Takes a pretty good push to overcome the detent but when it breaks the blade snaps out nicely. A knife i own that plays a similar edc role to compare this to is the Spyderco Sage 1 that i love but even tho the materials are much better it is not 10 times the knife this is. Its foreign made as well (Taiwan) . Just buy it. Its a $50 knife all day. 1 YEAR UPDATE This knife continues to amaze me. I have a pretty excessive collection of knives and this $10ish blade still gets the most pocket time. Why? Because it does everything a good EDC does and it resharpens very easily on my sharp maker. Also, I just use it and don't have to worry about losing it or damaging. I hate having to cringe everytime I cut something tough with a $100 spyderco. I like to carry this knife in the pocket with the clipped removed. I bought the blackwash version as well and left the clip on. The black clip is more discreet. Love it
Very Surprised
I must say that I was a bit apprehensive about buying this knife considering all the mixed opinions on this knife, especially with regards to bladeforum members... So I wasn't really sure what to expect when I finally bit the bullet and bought one of these puppies. I must say, this knife not only met, but exceeded my expectations! For only about $12, I was extremely pleased with the level of fit & finish on this knife. The opening action was very smooth, and the frame lockup was very good! The pocket clip is nice and strong, and it also has ambidextrous thumb studs for lefties like me! The all-steel construction of this knife makes it undoubtedly sturdy and prefect for an EDC (every day carry) knife that just screams to be beat on! And considering these knives can be had for only about $12, I'm not afraid to beat on mine at all! The blade is crafted from Chinese 8Cr13MoV steel and takes a razor edge, however it won't keep that edge for a super long time. As long as you know how to sharpen a knife, this doesn't present a big drawback to me and is by no means a deal-breaker. All in all, I would say this is a pretty freakin good knife! I would definitely purchase more of these. I also kind of dig the Sabenza like look! (I know, I know, this review would not have been complete without bringing up the whole sabenza thing somewhere!) My only grip with this knife is that I with they made it in a larger version, possibly like a 4" blade.
A very good EDC knife
I ordered 6 different knives and this is the only one I carry. I can't believe how much knife you get for the money. It was decently sharp out of the box, and a trip to the stones had it wizzing through paper easily. 8Cr13MoV is a respectable steel, roughly the same as 440c, so its gonna hold an edge decently, which it does. The action is smooth, and the frame lock is tight. I able to easily open and close this knife. I think the washers are nylon, but honestly for the price I don't overly mind. After using and carrying for several weeks the blade is still centered in the frame decently and the pivot screw hasn't come loose. Far more than I can say for the Kershaws I returned. With a smooth frame with only very light texturing I'm not sure this would be a great wet-handed knife, but the lack of aggressive texturing means it also doesn't chew on my pocket when it clip it. The design of course is similar to another, enormously more expensive knife. Thus it sits well in the hand, and is easy to open and close one handed. The detent also tight enough that its not a "flip knife" and the blade is less than 3", so outside of overzealous NYC where they intentionally loosen the screws on your knife so it can be called a "Gravity knife" for easy felonies, you should stay on the good side of the law. I would put this knife as a great EDC knife. Its small enough to live with day in and out, its quality enough where it matters, and its cheap enough to easily replace if it happens to be lost, or confiscated.
solid, hefty all steel knife
Super solid, all stainless steel. Has some weighty heft to it for its size. No wiggle in the blade. A little slippery, as you might imagine with smooth polished steel, but not too bad. The frame lock works well, and the jimping on the back of the blade is effective โ not too harsh, not too smooth and wimpy. In its solidity, itโs also a little sticky; flipping it open with your thumb is possibleโฆ sometimes. Closing will be a two-handed affair or a very careful and thoughtful one-handed technique. If you like this kind of knife, you might also seriously consider the Buck Mini Sovereign 743. Itโs about the same size, all steel, hefty and solid. But itโs also a button lock with a free-swinging blade, which makes it super-fun to open and close. Fun-fidgety one-handed open/close. Visually, your preference just depends on your sense of style. The Buck knife is about $12 more.
