However, at least on OSX, you cannot get the full performance of the drive without installing the security bundle as it includes the drivers. Once the drivers are installed, the drive is absolutely phenomenal. Easily maintaining over 420MB/s read and write performance (tested using BlackMagic Speedtest).Additionally, you do not need to setup the security for the drive. It is completely optional. So although the software is on the iMac, I have not opened or used it, and thus the drive is not 'locked' in any way.TL:DR: software is not required to use or operate the drive, but drivers in the software are necessary for the drive to perform optimally.
