Few months after moving in (move in Summer) we had no issues then we turned on the head in October and it worked fine until end of October then one day woke up with no heat. called insurance company they said have to pay decuctable and the HVAC guy came in Johnson HVAC Steelton Harrisburg PA. He spend somewhere between 3.5-5 minutes collected his deductable and said the switch (Safety) and the control board were bad as he was not getting any power to them. Would have to order parts by next wednesday (Trane supply store is in my town and they have the parts - when I checked) then insurance company said they will only cover upto 150$ as I did not have the annual maintanance record from the previous owners. I was looking at about 1000 dollars. Looked at over a dozen videos on youtube and decided to get a transformer 12 $ as no power was coming to the control board. Once transfomer was put, I had power tot he control board. Now I had the inducer motor come on but no gas at the furnace. The board was flashing 4 times indicating a limit switch issue. I ordered that from Trane supply for 22 dollars once that was put in (about 3 minutes to put that in). The ignition lamp came on and gas came on but we had heat. But the furnace was short cycling as the fan was not blowing. It made sense why the limit switch was bad. So stopped the furnace out of precaution to prevent a coil or other big damage and ordered a capacitor. I changed it in 7 minutes and turned on. The sequence of HVAC worked and thank god I had gas and 30 seconds later the fan started like nothing ever happened. I saved a some money and learned to trouble shoot. Can either wire lead be attached to either post?** A: correct , single microfarad caps are not labeled , there is no polarity **Q: This is listed as a replacement for the 97F5476 but that has three posts and this has two. Will it still work?** A: The 97F5476 seems to be a dual section capacitor with a 5uf section and a 20 uf section. This Amazon part would only replace the 5uf section. Maybe that is the portion defective in your system and it would work if you left the 20uf section of the old cap connected. If both sections are bad but the dual section caps are too pricey for you; you COULD buy a 20uf capactor AND a 5uf Capacitor, then tie one terminal of each together for the common connection and that combo would replace the 97F5476 (assuming that the two caps are rated at a similar AC voltage as the original) Also you will need to find a spot nearby to mount the second cap. If this were MY system, unless the dual capacitors were really cheep and available, I would replace my dual cap with two separate ones.
