You should be able to gently steam clean a sheepskin rug by brushing with the grain of the hair. The person who said it will shrink is wrong — going from hot to cold water will shock and felt/shrink wool or using hot water and agitation will felt wool. Simply using hot steam and not agitating the sheepskin rug while it’s hot should be fine.
