New Word A Day: Vocabulary and Riddles

The words this author chose were great. I learned more than I expected. One bonus was the author used the word later in one of his (really stupid) puns or questions (the bottom half of the written pages). I became angry with the open-endedness of most of the questions.The two illustrations on some of the pages were great. But the prompts to help the reader remember were confusing and unhelpful. Before I was very far into the book, I realized why a new vocabulary word a day (on a calendar page) was an easier way to learn vocabulary.I read about the author who explained that he worked on the book while traveling to and from work. The author is congratulated for spending his time so well. Maybe, if the presentation process were tweaked a bit, the outcome would be more useful.

I didn't purchase this book for myself, I purchased it for my children to share a word a day with my grandchildren. Many parents don't fully grasp how important reading comprehension is to a child's development and learning. If you are not aware, almost all learning is tied to vocabulary. Having spent twenty years in education I can assure you that many students' failures are directly impacted by a limited vocabulary. I have worked side-by-side with special education teachers and the main problem that students experience is poor to absent reading comprehension. Students can properly read an entire page and at the end of the page not be able to explain what they have just read. There is an enormous difference between reading and reading comprehension. Google "poor children and the word gap".

After having used this book for a while I am starting to see why it would be more beneficiary to have a small calendar style word-of-the-day piece that sits on your desk and you tear off the new word everyday ....because you see the word repeatedly through-out the day and it sticks in your memory better. I use this book in the morning but I never see the word again. Just food for thought.

Nice to , learn a new word each day. Pronunciation. Origins. Context. I only gave it 3 ★'s. Why? I think the Author, over thought it a wee bit. I sort of got stymied. Where the word was put into a sentence form. Especially when I was already quite familiar with the word. It might not be a problem for you. I grew up learning 5 words a day. From a dictionary.Overall, a good book. I recommend it.

I don't go in and learn a new word every day but do think having a place to check out new words and give yourself the opportunity to use them is a wonderful way to improve vocabulary, and without this device, one would often forget. Great way to feel good about yourself.

Probably would be good for a older elementary student or teen. Bit simplistic and not a lot in the way of games and puzzles. Basically a word, its definition and an example of its use. Each is accompanied by a bit of a cartoon. I got it when offered free.

Everyday a new word to learn and to maybe use that day. Now I have to admit some of the words weren't all that new to me, but I did have fun with them. My recommendation is simply just read it for the heck of it. I mean it is only one word a day and you never know when you might need to be superfluous.

The words chosen are fine. But the prompts to help one remember the definition and the cartoons are silly and confusing. If I continue doing this every day, I will just look at the word and skip the rest.

I love the idea. My son and I made it a challenge to get each word into general conversation as much as possible throughout the day. Sometimes that worked well but often it was impossible. Some words were also quite commonly already known.

Rubbish!!! There's a lot of strange words in this book. Outdated and I don't think anyone uses these words. I think it will make me sound retarded!

Much better than expected. Clear, easy to understand. Live the fun way it is written
