I already own a Swiss Champ (that I've had for over 20 years), a One Hand Open Sentinel, the Swisstool Spirit X multitool, a Ranger Grip Multitool Pocket-Knife and a Rescue Tool (which I hope I'll never have to use). The long and short of it is I lost all control and hit "buy now" on the Victorinox Swiss Army Onyx Collection Spartan Pocket Knife because it was totally unexpected and, quite frankly looked beautiful. It still is both but I've never really loved the Spartan knives, they're a bit small in my larger hands. Then, a few days ago I saw the Onyx Collection Ranger Grip 55. It showed up today and I immediately tore the package open! Now I already have a Ranger series knife and I like it, it's very functional and the one hand open for the main blade is truly awesome — but this one is in the Onyx Collection and everything I love about the Onyx Spartan is increased by an order of magnitude. This knife is also a work of art — but more importantly, to me, it's also a knife that is functional and sized properly for me. I love the fact that the main blade locks (like the rest of the Ranger series) with a VERY solid channel style lock and also like the rest of the Ranger series knives, it's easy to release the lock to close the blade by simply pressing on the Cross & Shield on the grip. A truly functional and beautiful knife! I probably won't be taking it on camping trips or out in rough areas because it's so gorgeous (and because I have another Ranger series knife), but I love having it in my collection! How well does this hold an edge?** A: Victorinox uses steel designated as EN 1.4110. The chemical designation of the steel is X55CrMo14. It’s Rockwell hardness is only 56 so it’s not a particularly hard steel. I find very easy to sharpen and it holds a good edge for a decent time. If you use it to cut boxes it won’t hold an edge very long but it’s so easy to sharpen I don’t mind.
