Flume gives me peace of mind and data I can use to economize
I have had my Flume 2 installed for a couple of months now, and I am impressed with the equipment and the company. Not only was the device as easy to install as they said (if an old lady can do it, you can!), but it has worked as promised from the moment it was activated. The instructions were simple and easy to follow; the need to preliminarily evaluate the compatibility of the device with your water meter was well explained and simple to do; both the written instructions and the videos were first-rate. The app is well constructed: easy to navigate, with clear and understandable graphics, helpful tasks, and suggestions. I live in a state with water restrictions, so it was an eye-opener to measure how many gallons were consumed by each cycle of my washing machine (I never found this exact data in the machine’s instructions or online). I have since revised my washing schedule, load sizes, and cycles to reduce my water consumption. This activity is easily monitored with the monthly goal you set in the Flume app. I also rest easier knowing that the app monitors for leaks real-time and sends text notifications if a leak is suspected. How many of us have gone into the garage or utility room only to find the floor awash from a leaking water heater? It happened to my friend just the other day; the heater had been leaking for some time, so there was water everywhere, soaking the floor, drywall, and adjacent storage boxes. Mold had started to grow. How often do you look at your water heater for leaks? Catching a leak early before the clean up becomes onerous is worth every penny you’ll spend on the Flume. As you can tell, I am a very happy Flume customer (no AI used in this review). Living in a time in which most of us have to be mindful of our resource consumption and utility bills, it is wonderful to have the Flume monitor on board.

The more you know
Although this was built for a moist environment (rubber seal on case, special coating on circuit board, replacement desiccant packets), mine stopped working after heavy rain and had evidence of water intrusion. HOWEVER, Flume customer service was awesome and I was able to get back up and running. Flume helped diagnose the system remotely, determined it had given up the ghost, and offered me two options: (a) a replacement sensor for $60 (which came with new housing and new $25 battery) or (b) an upgrade to the newer 2X system (sensor + bridge + battery) for about what these go for on Prime Day ($150ish). My decision came down to considering the device's lifespan vs leak-awareness. In the 3 years I had mine, it did notify me of a teensy trickle from an improperly closed hose bib. If I didn't have this sensor, I would lost 10 cents of water. However, it worked. If the leak was catastrophic, it would have significantly limited damage to my home that would far exceed the cost of even a brand new sensor. So definitely worth the $60 for a replacement sensor. There was another customer here that reported their sensor went out at the same time and I suspect they went through the same number of case opening/closing as I did, which could have worn down the seal and allowed water intrusion. It would be great if the company shipped replacement rubber gaskets for the housing. To prevent water intrusion going forward, I vacuum sealed mine, which was against Flume's recommendation because they thought it could potentially impact the sensor's ability to detect the meter. It did not. Regarding maintenance, this is a remote battery-powered sensor and batteries have to be replaced every 6-9 months. The company sends new desiccant packs with each battery replacement. I'm not sure what maintenance will look like going forward since the company switched to replaceable batteries, but I suspect desiccant packs can be left out to dry and reused. Regarding customer service: absolutely amazing. You do interact via chat but the team is super responsive. But responsiveness implies one direction so, to clarify, they had excellent follow-up too. They kept pinging me to see if I needed additional help, ask why I hadn't setup the replacement sensor that they knew I received, or by popping into my account to check on the health of the system (to ensure the sensor was talking to the bridge, bridge was talking to the router, etc.). Just on top of it. Ashley, Steven, Jake, Emily, Giana, and Mia all coordinated to resolve my sensor issue. Great US company out of Anaheim, CA!

Great idea, but not reliable for anything other than novel usage data
I had high hopes for this to fit into my home automation/monitoring environment. I already have a remote water shut-off that's tied to water sensors in the trouble spots (under sinks, water heater, washer, etc.) so I was really hoping Flume would be the final piece that would let me monitor and alert me to any leaks which I could then use as a trigger to shut-off my water when I was away. Setting up the Flume was very easy, although I did have an issue where it detected the wrong size water line for my meter. No problem - I had heard that could happen - so I messaged their support team and after a few back and forth messages (they didn't really read my first message, so they made me go through some unnecessary steps of re-positioning, re-calibrating, etc.) they were able to correct the pipe size and I was up and running. From there, the usage was incredibly accurate. I could flush my 1.7gpf toilet and a minute later Flume would show I used 1.7 gallons. I thought this was great and after monitoring the usage for a few days I felt that it was accurate and could add it to my home automation system. Unfortunately, I didn't wait long enough... After going for almost a week with perfect data, I configured alerts and thought I could trust the data but I was wrong. While out at dinner I received a leak alert and checked the dashboard. It was showing that I was using 6-10 gallons per minute despite nothing running at the house. In a panic, I shutoff the water to the house remotely but Flume still showed usage. Now I was really panicking since that meant a leak between the meter and the shutoff valve in the basement. I left dinner early and rushed home and quickly checked the basement and didn't see any leaks. I then went to the meter and it was showing 0 usage but Flume still said the water was running somewhere. I messaged Flume support and told them everything I had seen including the fact that: a) Usage had been 100% accurate for the past few days b) No change had been made in the placement of the sensor c) Flume was reporting usage (325 gallons in 40 minutes) even though the meter showed zero usage Support (which is chat/email only) wouldn't listen or even consider that I could have a faulty device. Instead, I was fed a steady stream of "just re-calibrate your sensor and see if it happens again" or "we need you to run an accuracy test". Neither of those would help since we had already proven that the sensor used to read the meter accurately and was properly calibrated. After close to an hour of chatting back and forth with Support I was told that a small amount of grass that was on the sensor could've caused the irregularities. That was the last straw - if the sensory (which is designed to work inside a metal box that can flood with water) could be thrown off by so much as a few small blades of grass then I don't feel it's robust enough to count on. So, if you simply want some novel data on your usage and it doesn't need to be accurate then give it a shot. If you are wanting something accurate then it may be best to look elsewhere.

Easy install, great data access, a budget solver and leak detector one leak pays for the device
Very easy installation, I have a large garden with an automated drip system my Flume water monitor allows me to track my usage and keep budget happy. Outdoor water leaks can be costly the flume notice helps catch a problem early. I camp one week every month so I can monitor my water usage while away on vacation. It has been a great investment, a valuable too.

No Fuss Leak Alerts and Water Tracking with Flume 2
I purchased the Flume 2 a few months after buying my first home. I researched various leak detection options like Moen Flo and Phyn Plus but ultimately decided on Flume because it monitors water usage directly from the water meter. This means I can monitor leaks not only inside my home but also on the water line servicing my home and my sprinkler system, providing a more comprehensive view of my water usage and potential issues. **Installation & Setup:** No plumbing or wiring required—just strap the sensor onto your water meter, plug in the Wi-Fi bridge inside your home, and follow the app’s step-by-step instructions. The app even prompted me to take a photo of my meter for calibration, and Flume’s support team confirmed compatibility before I bought it. The installation took about 15 minutes. **Performance & Accuracy:** While I didn’t test it for 0.01 gallon per minute accuracy, I did test the Flume 2 by filling a bucket and comparing the readings, and they matched exactly. The app dashboard is intuitive, showing real-time and historical usage, and you can set up custom alerts and water budgets to help manage your consumption. **Leak Detection:** Last year, Flume alerted me to a leak. After checking inside my home and ruling out any internal leaks, I discovered that the issue was actually a small leak right at the water meter. I contacted the utility company, and they promptly fixed the leak. This year, Flume alerted me again to a leak. After ruling out leaks inside the house and at the meter, I hired a leak detection company who found the leak on a coupling on the main water line. These two leaks just show how correct in my decision on flume versus the other water leak detection systems. **Smart Home Integration:** I was able to integrate Flume 2 with both Hubitat and Home Assistant, which made it easy to incorporate water usage data and leak alerts into my broader smart home automations. This flexibility was a huge plus, allowing me to set up custom rules and notifications that fit my household’s needs. **Battery Life & Maintenance:** The battery lasted a little over a year for me, even with the sensor about 30 feet away from the home base, which I have set up on the second floor. While replacing the flume 2 battery was straightforward and only took a few minutes, it is a propriety battery pack though compared to flume 1. Flume also sells a replacement battery kit for around $20, which includes not only the batteries but also desiccant packs to help keep the sensor dry. The black battery pack does allow you to diy a battery pack if you like with regular lithium AA batteries. **Limitations:** Flume 2 won’t automatically shut off your water if a leak is detected, however, I addressed the shutoff limitation by adding a Bulldog valve robot, which does integrate with Flume and allows for automated water shutoff. While Flume does attempt to break down water usage by fixture type using machine learning—and you can help the algorithm by tagging usage events—I’ve found that this feature isn’t very accurate. One significant limitation I’ve noticed is that, while Flume will alert you if the Wi-Fi bridge goes offline, it does not notify you if the sensor itself stops reporting to the bridge. This happened to me twice: once due to a range issue and another time when the battery died. Although there is supposed to be a low battery alert, I did not receive one when the battery actually died. While flume saved me twice from leaks, I could have easily missed those leaks because the sensor went offline without being alerted. It is important to be aware of this gap and why I rated it as 4 instead of 5. **Awareness & Savings:** I haven’t noticed much in terms of day-to-day water savings, but I am definitely much more aware of my daily and weekly water habits. The detailed usage breakdowns and alerts have helped me understand exactly when and how water is being used in my home, which is valuable for long-term conservation and catching potential issues early. **Final Thoughts:** Flume 2 is a must-have for any homeowner who wants to avoid water damage, stay informed, and monitor water usage with minimal hassle. Highly recommended for its accuracy, reliability, and user-friendly design.

Best I have found and almost perfect!
As someone who loves automation and smart devices I had already installed a live power monitor in my house, but was not aware of this product’s existence. Actually found it by chance while browsing and I am glad I did. There are two versions of the hardware and as of October 2020 the Flume 2 is the latest. This version has better battery life (see battery picture) and longer range. Interestingly enough after I registered for an account I got an email from Flume with a link to get a 50% off coupon from the water company, and a note about reaching out to my home insurance for a discount. I plan to do both and was very pleased. As for the device itself, it’s almost perfect but definitely a 5-star item. It’s just 2 pieces (plus a small power adapter). There is a sensor that is placed around the main water meter, and a small bridge box that connects to your home WiFi. Unlike the other systems I saw which you attach to a pipe and thus only measure water flow through that pipe, this attaches with a rubber band (provided) to the water meter and reads fluctuations in the magnetic field given off by the water flow inside, for your entire home. They even include rubber gloves and a tool to open the water pit in the street, wow! Setup was a breeze and the step-by-step process went very smoothly and quickly. Launch the App, scan a few QR codes from the devices and enter your WiFI and you’re off. Meter sensitivity seems good but I just installed it so its been operating for just a day, so we’ll see after a while. Already told me I used 85 gallons in about 30 minutes, ouch. Positives: * Super responsive and proactive support team! They reached out via chat in real-time as I got a leak alert in order to explain it and support me. I was very impressed. * Super easy and simple installation - from box opening to finishing the water sensor calibration it was about 15 min. * Works from very far away - mine is in a full metal box down the driveway about 200ft from the water meter, and still has perfect signal. I saw mentions of 1000ft+ * Long battery life - supposed to last a few years but still to be verified * Very sensitive to water usage and will provide breakdown of usage by hour (broken into minutes), day, week and month. * Has website access for the interface, as well as an iOS and possibly an Android app. * Allows editing of weekly water budgets and specifying the number of irrigation cycles per day * Irrigation detection is in beta but has already shown it's pretty accurate after use one day. Negatives/Feature Requeats: * Not really real-time - app says to pull to refresh and it’s delayed about 1min. It’s fine, but real-time would be much better, especially since it’s advertised as such and this is the 2nd generation Flume 2 hardware. * No ability yet to specify cost per gallon, fees and tiers, to compare with water bill and get early heads up on each month’s bill. - support said they are taking my feedback under advisement. * No HomeKit integration (would also bypass the WiFi selection and credential exchange, and make this setup more private) * Asks for a LOT of personal info, some it seems it could do without, but it may be for future features. * More detail/options in the iOS app, like comparing usage from different users with similar households would be nice. * Breakdown by appliance pool/irrigation/house is not implemented but suposedly coming in 2021, as per their support team. If HomeKit integration, real-time readings, and water cost as well as device usage is added, this would be 100% perfect. But do not let any of the "negatives" scare you, the positives greatly outweigh them and since it's software I am sure most will be resolved.

Amazing option
I have a slab leak. While rerouting the pipes I'm looking for a water usage monitor and remote shut-off valve. I have doubts about a battery-driven monitor without plumbing. But it ends up being my best option. First, if I can't monitor the main meter, I have to buy 3 monitors, one for the house and 2 for irrigation. I can change that but it requires a lot of work - digging. My meter is underground on the public sidewalk. It looks dark and small in there and I didn't think the Flume will fit inside. But if somebody can plumb something in there, there must be plenty of space for the Flume. The other thing is meter compatibility. I have a Neptune without clear markings so it may be the one that is not compatible. But I think as long as you don't have a too new one, it should be compatible. The installation is easy. You just need to tie the Flume on the side of the meter with a thick rubber band. I had two potential problems. When the app tries to connect with my wifi, an error shows up telling me to retry. It doesn't surprise me as my wifi 6 has the same SSID for both 2.5 and 5 GHz. I might have tapped retry and they the app jumps to calibration without confirming that my wifi is connected. I tried to confirm before putting my Flume down the rabbit hole. There's no way to go back on the app. There's no wifi indicator. I tried to add a new device but it wasn't allowed because all the devices have a serial number. So I just put the Flume next to the meter and it worked. The 2nd potential problem is that the app tells me that the Flume moved more than once. It hasn't. I could have calibrated the app with the readings on the meter. But I'm impressed enough. I think the Flume is detecting the rotation of the red dial, which is exactly what the meter does to measure water flow. If a metal or a magnet rotates, it will disrupt the electromagnetic field around it. So without calibrating, I believe the Flume will be accurate, maybe occasionally missed a turn. First, it's reassuring that my slab leak isn't deteriorating into a measurable amount on the meter. When the app says zero, the red dial doesn't move and I don't have to pay for the leak. I reseeded the lawn and I was using a lot of water since to let the grass grow. But the Flume tells me I'm using over 300 gal of water a day when the sprinklers are on. I checked and all leaks are very minor. I have the incentive to change the watering program. And recently I removed the flow limiter on my showers. The app tells me that it's about a quarter for a long shower. The usage report is on every hour. So you can know how much water you use for the washing machine, dishwasher, and maybe flushing if you plan enough. Now for the remote shut-off, instead of an expensive valve, I found a mechanical "hand" to turn off the quarter valve for about $40. I tried and it should work. But it doesn't fit my very old valve because it is very bulky - the valve body is much thicker than the pipe. Any newer valves will fit.

I expected more from FLUME 2.
This is a first pass at reviewing this device. I will add to it when I learn more. It was recommended (but not sold) by an irrigation professional contact . Amazon got it to me in 3 hours and I installed it 5 hours ago. Reason for buying was having an alarm to notify me of a leak in irrigation system (common and cost/waste of water is the big motivator) or an alarm in terms of leak inside of house when I am away from home (cost of water damage issue) . Secondarily to look at useage in various branches of the irrigation system as well as pool evaporation. My meter is in a well in the front yard like many properties in the greater Phoenix area. The well is ~ 50 feet from the house. FLUME gives you a handy tool to open the lid on your well. The sensor simply straps to the meter and this takes 2 minutes. "Sensor" is a bit of a misnomer because it does not really sense flow direcly. It senses the rotating magenetic field of an impeller in the water meter. In effect eh FLUME sensor is eaves dropping on the flow meter in the water meter. Looking at Patent 10750253 confirms this. Clever! So you would think that clever scheme would then report 1:1 exactly the same flow rate as the water meter. FLUME tech support remotely ran a calibration (as a favor) while I asked them for support in getting the radio link working better. You would think that it would have been really accurate after a calibration by FLUME tech. FLUME now measures 100.8 Gal while my water meter reports 103.4 Gal. a -2. 6% error. I could live with that error in the auto calibration if they woudl give you some place in the UI to manually enter the 1.02579 calibration factor so that the meter an FLUME would read 1:1. But there is no way to enter a calibratin factor manually. The sensor is batery powered and has a low power 900 MHz radio transciever to communicate witeh the WiFi bridge. Thsi is challenging becsue the sensor is in a small well and has no direct line of sight. WAHt is really frustating is that they is no singal level indicator to aid yo in moving the WiFi Bridge around to get the best signal. You can't call FLUME. The only tech support is chat which is anoying becuse it seems tht the support person is trying to deal witeh 4 other people at the same time as you. So I tried the chat and could not convince the tech to give me some numerical readings. It turned into game of warmer - colder. Tech informs me that FLUME purposely left the signal strength indicator out of the UI because it was too confusing. Not sure whey they can't give us the 5 bars we have had on cell phones for 25 years. The warmer - colder over a chat was pretty frustrating. Eventually he shared the actual reading number with me and I got a better sense of what was making a bigger difference in increasing signal. And the sensor connected well enough to let FLUME tech do a calibration. I had really hoped to optimize the location of the Bridge because I did not want a marginal RF link situation with the radio doing a lot of retries and consuming the proprietary battery more quickly as well as possibly missing data. Eventaullay a tech lead got on the chat and things went a bit better. I ended up putting the Wifi Bridge in a second floor window witeh a better view into the well. But I had not yet put the concrete lid back on the well when the 7 pm cutoff for tech support happened. Is seems to be conneced now but not sure how robust it is without a signal level indicator. Will "chat" again tomorrow with support. Also , FLUME is limited to classifying water usage by various devices in the household. I had hoped to be able to have the 9 different sprinkler zones as separate elements of my irrigatin system to dermine say if if say one zone is leaking . It will not do that. You have to sort it out from the 1 minute resolutin bar graph on your phone (that can't be exported as CSV for analysis in Excel). I will add to this review as I live with it a bit longer.

THIS IS AWESOME
WORKS GREAT. Make sure your water meter is compatible, you have wifi available nearby. The app is great. This device won't shut your water off like more expensive competitors, however it will email/text you if there is a leak or high flow event. Great for monitoring water consumption and alerting quickly if you have a leak or leave a tap on. Customer service is very responsive. Highly recommend.

Useless in Europe
Even though they ship to Europe, this product only works in Canada and USA. In Europe it is completely useless and you will have no option other than to send it back

Worst Customer Service - None Actually
Dont buy this. It doesnt work and if you want to contact someone, they dont have a phone number. Worst customer service.. Actually no customer service .. Just pay your money and good luck . They are too greedy to have someone pick up the phone and help. A $600 mistake .. ..
