This ball is similar to those used by ballists of the early to mid 19th century. A cloth wrapped core with a hand stitched lemon peel leather cover. Town balls are softer than today's baseball, in part, because town ball required that runners must be "plugged" or soaked" with the ball meaning the runner had to be hit or touched by the ball to record the out. It was used in the mid 1800s for the Massachusetts rules form of the game of Town Ball. If you are not playing town ball, it makes a great conversation piece for your desk. Hand sewn. Cooperstown Bat Company was established in Cooperstown, NY, the Home of Baseball, in 1981 and is currently one of the oldest bat companies in the United States. Our first bats were for the collector or hand personalized for the fan. Cooperstown Bat worked, and still does, with Hall of Famers to create amazing pieces of art to be autographed and collected. Cooperstown Bat in the present day makes professional quality game use bats for players of all ages.
