Solid gate for pets and kids alike
We've been practically killing ourselves trying to step over the traditional doorway gates and finally decided to upgrade to something more logical. After spending some time perusing the Amazon I came across this gate. Looked good at first glance, seemed to get good reviews, so I figured we might as well give it a try. After being chauffeured to my doorstep I unboxed it rather easily and surveyed the situation. (Buyer Beware: the empty box has a way of attracting other smaller, empty feral boxes due to its cavernous interior. BE CAREFUL as the smaller boxes can be rather aggressive and might jump out and BITE you!!) But I digress, after a quick skim through the instructions it was time to figure out where to mount it on the stairs. We decided on the landing that we have at the bottom of the stairs since we're trying to keep the furbabies from getting upstairs. Of course this presented me with a couple of hurdles. First, the base trim on the stairs is pretty pronounced. So the vertical support that the gate swings from wasn't going to be able to be flush against the wall, while also keeping the gate close enough to the floor. After doin' a think, I decided the best thing to do was fill the void between the wall and the edge of the trim with wood. I set off into the woods(hop) to fetch some options out of the off-cut bin. After trying a few things out I settled on (2) pieces of 1"x3" pine, sistered together will glue and screws. Not only did the "post" fill the void, but it was the perfect width for the mounting doohickeys to grab on to. I cut the post to just above the mounting doohickey, lined everything up, and screwed the whole thing to the wall with some of those self tapping, heavy duty drywall anchors (I <3 those things!). Next I had to deal with a decorative, wooden railing post on the other side. I decided, why not go back to the same well! I used (1) piece of the 1"x3" (cut to size). I screwed that into the bottom of the railing post where it was squared off. Then, I cut a spacer to bridge the gap between the top of the post and the curved part of the railing support. Once I got the spacer in just right I put a screw through the metal post, the wood post, the spacer, and into the railing support. Suffice it so say she's solid.. The product itself seems sturdy and well built. I ended up getting a second gate for a different part of the house, which I think speaks for the product in it of itself.

Nice sturdy, baby safe stair gate.
I purchased this gate for the top of our stairs. Well, we (hubby, lol) didn't read the directions so initially installed the gate backwards, so had to reverse it making it time consuming for install, but again, our fault. FYI, the gate is set to open/pull towards you if you are facing the stairs. It will not work opening into the stairwell as that defeats some of the safety features of the gate. Unfortunately, our stairs is right by our entry door, so we have to remember to close the gate every time so the door doesn't hit it. All of that aside, as it doesn't tell you about the gate... The gate is strong. The latch is strong and yet easy enough to open with one hand. Since we only need the gate about one day a week, we would like to take it down, but have yet to figure out a quick way to do so. The gate is metal, with some had plastic parts (handle, gate stop). The gate is adjustable in width, so will be easy to adjust to fit your doorspace. It can be used in a space other than the top of the stairs if you wanted. This gate was reasonable in price and had good reviews. I'm glad we picked this one, from a brand that is trusted for baby safety.

A very sturdy gate that may require minor re-engineering depending on the installation
This gate was not purchased to keep children from falling down the stairs so much as it was for keeping a dog out of the upstairs. It works very well for that purpose. Installation was straightforward, although I will recommend expanding wingnut bolts for the striker side of the gate, rather than the junk plastic insert and screw setup. The gate's latch closes very firmly and it will rip the striker bar out of the wall eventually unless it's installed properly. In our case, the wall directly opposite from the hinge was all drywall, with no possibility for a secure anchor in a stud. Once the striker was anchored properly, this gate has worked wonderfully ever since. Both of our kids (4 and 7) can use the gate without any trouble, and as stated above, it works great to keep the dog downstairs. The plastic bracket at the bottom is quite sturdy, and once latched, there is no way it could be pushed open from above.

Perfect for top of stairs
We purchased two of these after moving into a rental with two sets of stairs. We were paranoid about our daughter falling down the stairs and got these installed as soon as they came in. These are perfect for the top of stairs because there's no rail on the bottom which means no tripping hazard. To open, it requires you to push down and slide so child proof and sometimes adult proof if you don't know how to work it. The color is decent and not a complete eye sore. It can be installed alone but is easier if you have help. Because we installed these in a rental when we removed them the landlord made us pay to re-do the dry wall. Honestly it only left screw holes not any worse than pictures, but just fair warning.
