House of Chess - Galaxy Staunton Wooden Chess Set Pieces King Size 3" Triple Weighted

Chess pieces fit 1 1/2 inch squares perfectly. Nice heft for each and every piece and pawn in the set. Wood choice (Hardwickia Rosewood/Boxwood) for dark light and light pieces are beautifully coated with CLEAR finish and then sanded and refined to smooth feel. The wood turning is very defined and proportional. The slightly opened mouth of the knight showing the "teeth" is artfully done. Initially the bishop shape was a compromise. The thought was that the bishop miter was too round rather than pointy. But the shape turns out be very helpful in picking up and placing the piece. The search for chess pieces that are proportional to the hand crafted walnut/maple board has finally been completed. This set has made three other efforts into gift giving events for the nephews.

Upon receipt of the House of Chess 3" Rosewood Staunton Wooden Chess Set, I was very impressed with the quality and workmanship of the set. The set was shipped in a heavy-duty cardboard container. The pawns were each wrapped in miniature bubble wrap for protection, each of the other pieces was first wrapped in a sort of soft wrapping and then wrapped in the same type of miniature bubble wrap. This insured that the fine details of the larger pieces were adequately protected from damage during shipping. This was over and beyond what I have ever received with my other chess set orders over the past years. I was really impressed with the fine detail and quality of workmanship of each chess piece. The carving is nicely done and the finish of all the pieces is of high quality. The pieces are listed as being triple weighted and they certainly appear to be as stated, which adds a nice heft to each piece. Overall, I am very pleased with this set, and it will be prominently displayed along with my other chess sets collection. I would definitely recommend this chess set for the excellent workmanship and beautiful design. I would do business with this seller again.

These are well weighted for size. The light color is darker than I thought it would be, but goes perfectly with the chess board my husband made for me out of black walnut. I like the luster and the detail especially on the knights.

I did end up returning these, however, I wanted to leave a review for others. I am not too familiar with all of the ins and outs of chess. I play the game. That's about it. I wanted to get my husband a nice chess set for his birthday. My goodness did I get lost down the rabbit hole. After looking at full chess sets I decided I wanted heavy chess pieces and then hoped I'd find a nice board to place them on...all the while sticking within the budget I had set for myself. After way too much deliberation I ordered this set. These pieces are titled "tripe-weighted". Again I don't know too much about chess "equipment" but I didn't feel these pieces had enough weight to them to claim to be triple-weighted. The package itself weighed under 2 lbs. And the company does list the weight on their site (under 2lbs). When I returned them the weight on my return label had them weighing in at 1.75 lbs. The pieces themselves were beautiful and did look and feel well made. They just didn't feel heavy enough for me to justify purchases them vs another set I had my eye on. I returned these and ordered a full set...pieces that were not weighted at all...but the set was gorgeous and I really didn't see the point in spending more for "triple-weighted" if they actually didn't feel substantial in the hand. I wanted something on the smaller side, and this set is perfect. Great for carrying in your backpack on the offchance somebody you run into wants a game. I use it primarily for various exercises from the "Rapid Chess Improvement" book i've been working out of. These chessmen are very pleasant and sturdy. They can handle being whacked around like Fischer might handle them, or they have enough weight to feel good sliding them around. The extra queens are of course always a nice bonus, and the rosewood grain is very nice to look at. Definitely very impressive and detailed set for the money. I wish they offered it in 3 1/2" size as well, since this one feels so great. I'd also like to add that the shipping (from India) was very timely and arrived long before the ETA provided by amazon. 5/5*****

I hand-made a portable folding chessboard for my son for his 40th birthday and wanted a quality set of pieces to go with it. This set is very well made, perfect size (the squares on the board were 1.5"), no visible defects and the weight was perfect. Highly recommended. I may buy more sets for chess boards I'm planning to build and sell in the future.

I got this awesome set to go with a leather chess board I made. It’s perfect because of the weight, craftsmanship, beautiful wood and excellent stain/finish. I picked this for all of the above reasons, and in particular I saw how the knights stand out because they are carved with more detail than similar sets in the $60 price range. To get that feature in other sets I realized I would have to pay another $100 or so. On top of all that, they arrived on time and were perfectly protected by the fitted foam padding. Do not believe any review that says these are not weighted or that “the varnish was still sticky after 6 months”.

This is a solidly built and elegant chess set at a reasonable price. The pieces are weighted for additional stability, which also helps to maintain their uprightness when moved in a hurry. The service from House of Chess is exemplary - they delivered on time, and promptly replaced one of the pieces that had a slight defect to it. I would recommend this set to anyone who enjoys playing with a professional-style set.

These are awesome chess pieces made with beautiful hardwood, very well crafted, nicely weighted, and incredible value. I'm using them on a board with 1.5" squares and I think they are the perfect size for that. They came very well packaged, and shipping time from India was very good too, especially as it was over the holidays.

Les pièces reçues sont agréables au toucher, avec un joli bois (notamment les pièces noires). Les pièces identiques d’une même couleur ont des poids qui varient peu (±1 g en général) ; mais en moyenne, les pièces noires pèsent environ 25 % plus lourd que les pièces blanches. Rien de bien grave à mon avis.

I got this set for my tournament no.5 chess board, and these look awesome! Although the pieces aren't portable, I don't think I will be using them on any other board. I received the package with a nice green felt bag for the pieces though! They are a great size, and overall quite happy with this purchase!

Très bien! À part la tête des chevaux qui sont horribles (yeux globuleux, on dirait des créatures sorties de l’enfer) les pièces sont d’excellente qualité, lestées et de bonne taille, il y a une dame de chaque couleur en plus .Bref excellent sur mon échiquier n°5, je recommande vivement, et concernant les chevaux... suffit de rajouter 100$ pour en avoir des mieux. Excellent rapport qualité prix.
