I am writing this review as a 15 years of DSLR photographer&videographer that bought this phone to use its cameras not to miss great moments that I don't want to miss while I am not carrying my Nikon DSLR cameras and lenses. First of all, I was a Samsung Note 9 user for about 2.5 years which is a good phone but its cameras are very disappointing. After using that kind of big phone, I wanted to switch something smaller but unfortunately all flagship spec phones are equal sized or bigger which I really didn't want. Sony Xperia 5 II is a great match with what I was looking for. Great battery life, very good Android experience without lots of bloatware, very good size which is about equal with Note 9 but much slimmer and its corners are not sharp like Note 9 which made my trousers damaged after carrying in my pocket for a long time. Its processor is very powerful, screen is great and also having 3.5mm input is a huge plus for me since I have a high quality wired headphone that I don't want to replace with a wireless one. Now I want to talk more about its photo and video capabilities. It has reasonably bigger sized sensors for its main 24mm and ultra wide cameras. I really love to have 24mm main camera instead of 28mm which most of the smartphones have. I always hate 28mm lenses which I really don't know the reason to be honest so 24mm wide angle lens is a much better companion for me. Ultra wide angle camera is also autofocus which most of the companies are lacking that is also another plus for me. I wanted at least 12mp cameras for the main and ultra-wide so Sony's decision is an exact match for me. Please don't fool yourself, having 108mp or other very high resolution cameras doesn't help anything about your photography and videography which is a totally marketing gimmick and there is no use in the real life. The most important thing is the sensor size, sensor and lens performance. Sony's basic camera is really crap. It even cannot autofocus on close distances where actually the lenses are being able to focus. So most of the times, I am using Camera Pro which is a really nice app that gives you a DSLR feeling to use. I am taking RAW + JPEG photos since I like to push photos on Photoshop where RAW is much more useful. RAW files are good to process, autofocus is very nice with Camera Pro. Cinema Pro app is also very nice, its stabilization is very smooth and helpful but I don't like the idea to create projects for every single time that I want to change some settings, it is like using Adobe Premiere on a camera which I believe can be a little more user friendly. Today I had a chance to push the camera with a sunset timelapse, you can watch the video that I added which is a very good performance from a smartphone and I also added the long exposure photo I done with that sequence. These 2 can be a guide for you that what you can do with this phone. I will try to update my review when I have a chance to shoot different scenes that I believe worth sharing. Update : I tried to upload a new video I shoot with my phone but it seems that I can only upload one video for a review. I attached another long exposure photo from the photos I shoot during my latest timelapse. I enjoy using its cameras. The main thing annoys me about the phone is the sound key, its main feature to increase or decrease the sound of medias instead of the ring tone. If you want to increase or decrease the ring tone level, you need to pop into a deeper menu which is time consuming for a simple feature.

This was purchased with my own money. What is not to like about this phone. Okay the only thing that's not great is the 8mp front camera. That's the only bad thing about this phone. So with that out of the way. I've been using this phone for about a week now and it's such a great driver. Having upgraded from Apple. Emphasis on upgraded. Oh Android how have I missed you. So I had to make a big decision whether to purchase the brand new iPhone 12 pro max or tjis Xperia 5 ii. I'm so happy I chose the latter. Also the front camera may disappoint, the rear camera works like a gem. Not to mention the pro app for camera and videography which give you full control. Your phone screen is probably the most screen time you use a day. You will not be disappointed, 120hz refresh rate. Just wow, wow wow. The sceen is beautiful, it really makes it immersive when it comes to watching Netflix and YouTube. The sound is wonderful it has this vibration feature to vibrate the screen which is alright, but the front facing speaking is more than enough. I pair it with the best wireless headphones out (sony) and the sound is great. Btw it still has a headphone jack. Cough cough. Honestly it took me 3 weeks of YouTube videos and reviews to make the decision and it's an amazing phone. So do not regret and purchase this phone. It is one of the best Android phones available.

First of all, I'm very impressed by the build quality. The design is nice and it has a premium feel. Love th 120 Hz mode (key selling point for me). Video seems very good and obviously high spec. However, I quickly noticed some issues: - screen does not stay off during calls. Initially I thought that the proximity sensor was at fault but I have run the diagnostics and the sensor seems fine. I've tried factory resetting. After searching on google it seems to be a common issue reported on forums and people are just hoping that the Android 11 update solves it. I am disappointed that we are having to wait this long - Sony released two updates since the phone was launched but they have not sorted this issue. If the issue remains I'll have no choice but to return the phone which I don't really want to do. - Photos are a bit disappointing. Feels like something you would not expect for a 2020 flagship phone. Camera can be show to respond at times with unpredicatable autofocus. Yes, there is the pro mode.. but this also feels disappointing. Doesn't feel like a substitute for a real camera! - Poor wifi range. Having upgraded from a Huawei P10 I find the range much better on the P10. Maybe Huawei has a better wifi antenna design or maybe I was a bit unlucky with this particular 5 II unit. All in all, a bit disappointing considering the price. This phone certainly does have its appeal with a fairly unique feature set, but I feel Sony needs to get the basics right before we can enjoy the full potential of this phone. Hopefully we will quickly see some fixes through software updates, but I can't help feel concerned that this phone was not fully tested on Android before release. Perhaps that just comes with more investment in the smartphone market.. something Sony does not have. I have given this 4/5.. was tempted to give 3.. but I'll give Sony the benefit of the doubt hoping Android 11 sorts out the screen issue during calls. Edit: Having spent more time on the Photo Pro app I think I am happier with the camera overall. Just needs a good understanding from the user. For example, setting the Photo Pro app to Auto is as good as using the standard camera app but allows you to get HDR images. So, I'm finding I do all my shooting in the photo pro app (default at auto). The standard camera app is still faster overall, for example, taking a video so it just needs a bit of thinking on the spot on what app to use if you are to optimise fully... but all users may not have the patience!

And the best Sony has to offer as well. I was a little taken aback by the form factor but I got used to it really quickly. The screen if fantastic, battery life is off the charts (2 days at normal usage - 4 if I don't button it too much). Great camera and the fact it comes with a lot of the stock apps is a plus - although I would've preferred a dedicated picture library app and not Google's - but there's plenty to choose from in the store. The music is sounding crisp and loud and it has tons of storage. Build quality is also fantastic being made in Japan, which kinda surprised me in a nice way. If you want a great Android phone then this is the one you should get.

Amazing phone. Super comfortable to hold and love the aspect ratio. Camera is good, fingerprint reader is easy to accidentally press, but it's still very responsive. Performance is great, battery is also great All in all, very good phone. I'm super happy with it.

Bought this phone for my son. He loves it and is never off it unless the it needs charged, but the battery is good and has a long life. I would reccomend it. good ptice too.

I like Sony phones because they take audio and photography seriously. I have a large music collection that I listen to on the move thorugh headphones or via a bluetooth speaker on holiday. This phone not provides a headphone jack but also the option to add more memory using an SD card. Both these options are missing on so many phones today. I also really like the camera features, particualrly the camera button on the side of the phone for quick access. The unusually narrow width of the phone also makes it much easier to use one handed. I have two gripes: the phone is slippery as hell so a phone case is absolutely vital if you want to keep it for longer than a day. A pity because it spoils the lines of the phone. The second gripe is the cost. It's just too expensive for what it offers, like so many Sony products.

Lastest Update and reduced 2 stars It just gets worse! Bluetooth terrible even when paired with the latest Sony headphones. Lots of websites are buggy and Android isn't running very well now even with all of the lasteat updates. Brightness poor and worsening. One year on: Reduced from 4 to 3 stars because of poor screen brightness (seems to have got worse), buggy fingerprint reader, battery poor, generally buggy software. The camera is poor when used as a point and shoot but pretty good in pro mode. The Bluetooth isn't great at connecting to my car - can take 10 minutes to connect. Still better than many phones but expensive for a bug ridden product. Headphone socket is still a must for me so will stick with it. Original review: Great quality phone with a few minor annoyances to get used to if you are moving over from Samsung. Best features for me are audio quality, battery life and 120hz screen. I'm not too bothered with 5G but I'm sure it's worth having. It's also great to have a headphone socket as I use a few different sets of headphones. This also includes a charger unlike the S21. A few minor annoyances are - the navtigation buttons are the opposite way around to Samsung phones and you cannot change them, no wireless charging and fingerprint sensor can be a bit over sensitive. The camera is great considering it has fewer megapixels than most - it's seems to be all in the software! I like the size and shape too - more comfortable to hold than many of the new big phones. I really don't know why more people don't have Sony phones. (I didn't get headphones in the box but Amazon listed them as included - I was compensated for this - supply of headphones seems to be variable.)
