Will this work with a (15amp) 1hp motor on a wood lathe.

Hi. Yes, if you're product is rated for 15 amps, then you're not exceeding the 15-amp rating of this foot switch. It will work fine. The capacitor start is a good point, but because it's on the motor side of the foot switch, the power it dumps into the motor on startup doesn't run through the footswitch cable. I need a switch for my dental welder; will this come with a 2-prong male plug?

No, but it should still work for your application. It has a 2-wire w/ground combination male plug and female receptacle. That is, on one side of the plug there are 2 flat blades and 1 round pin that will fit in any 15 or 20 amp polarized grounded outlet receptacle. On the other side of the plug is a polarized female receptacle (this is where you plug your dental welding's 2-prong male plug in) with 2 flat slots and 1 round hole that will accept any 15amp polarized male 2 blade plug or any 15amp male 2-wire w/ ground plug.

Will this work like a variac?
