Vinyl LP repressing of this 1996 album. In a career full of brilliant, groundbreaking music, the Richard D. James Album remains Aphex Twin's drill 'n' bass masterpiece. It was James's fourth and most widely popular full-length to date upon it's original release, and reinvented the artist as a commanding influence on like-minded groups such as Radiohead who were tiring of the guitar / bass / drums format. Moving even further away from his ambient and acid house beginnings, the album matches James's trademark fragile, slow-moving melodies with harsh, quick breakbeats. When it was released, fellow electronic artists such as Orbital and Underworld had just begun to filter moderate amounts of drum 'n' bass in their work, but the Richard D. James Album was more extreme than virtually all jungle at the time. The album continues to gain high marks from music critics, ranking 40th on Pitchfork's Top 100 Albums of the 1990s and 55th on NME's Top 100 Albums of All Time. A peculiar and personal work, the Richard D. James Album is a modern classic which offers the same thrill on the first listen as the hundredth.

THIS ALBUM IS A CLASSIC!!! this vinyl is missing songs???
Yes, I was happier than a pig in Shiite upon the arrival of the greatest collection of electronic compositions of all time! The Richard D James album is flawless and has inspired a generation of electronic musicians and fans. I must say, I was a bit disappointed when the record came and I noticed some tracks were missing from the track listing. It's always been a bit confusing to understand the track listing of any aphex twin album, if there is even a track listing... But Richard D James Album has never been an album i knew by the names, instead i recognize each song On this and most aphex releases when i hear it. Instead of listing the songs in a traditional manner with some kind of legible font, sloppy hand writing scribbles illegible words on the back cover with names like "Peek 824545201," " Cornish Acid," "4," and (a personal favorite of mine) track 3.5 "girl/boy song!" As I said, I never really knew all the names and the order of said names in this album, I did notice there were only 10 (or 9.5) songs on this vinyl release. So, unfortunately I can only give the vinyl release 4 (4.5) stars due to the missing songs. If you want to know the songs that are missing, then look it up... God knows I can't give you many names of songs from the this album. I can and will break the news to all you hipsters who are fans of the infamous song "milkman," you will not hear that particular song on wax! Also, the 4 (3.5) songs I listed are indeed on this vinyl release. I am still very happy with the songs that are on this record and hardly miss the songs that aren't.

Weird, Intense, and Innovative
Aphex Twin, Richard D. James, is one of the most innovative techno/electronica artists out there today. Many people say that his Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is his best, while others say his EP, Come to Daddy. Personally, I like I Care Because You Do as his best, but you have others saying that The Richard D. James album is the best. I think it is his most experimental and innovative. James is a master at putting together beautiful ambient melodies with harsh, dissonant sounds. However, he takes this to the extreme on this CD with a "drill and bass" approach. This is not an easy album to listen to but then again this is what makes him so unique. It is so intense that I wouldn't recommend listening to this several days in a row because it could probably cause you to go crazy. I give it 4 stars because it is so hard to listen to; however, it is a brilliant and bold statement made by one of the greatest musicians of recent times.

An Adventure In Recorded Sound
From stuttering stops to blistering beats and flashes of noises ranging from synthesiers to recorded voices Aphex Twins 1996 effort, "Richard D. James Album", is an album that will keep you listening through and through no matter how many times you have listened to it, and depending on your musical tastes may take some getting used before you fully appreaciate the genius of the music on here. Prime examples of some of the insane music you hear on this album would be on tracks such as, "Corn Mouth", "4", etc. This album still holds up today because of the fact that it was and is ahead of its time in the realm of the electrnoica music genre and paving the way for artists such as, Radiohead to fully incorporate the use of combining electrnoic music elements with standard musical instruments. So what are you waiting for if you want to hear some of the most insane greatest electrnoic music around than this album if for you.

classic
album named aptly after the man himself - this album gives off a vibe which epitomises everything aphex twin is known for. girl/boy song is a masterpiece, i have never found a single person who doesn't like that song regardless of what their musical tastes are like. yellow calx is a prefect prelude to this song and was basically what got me into jungle drum n bass style music in my early teen years. entire album is a classic and a must-have for any aphex twin fan (though what kind of aphex twin fan doesnt own this already in one form or another??) and certainly worth a listen from anyone who is interested in his music

Electronic masterpiece
This album is a beast in RDJ's output; it ranks as close to Drukqs as perfection gets. I'm more a fan of the chaotic hard choppy beats than the ambient output, but what you like is what you like. I love the record for the fact of its roughness. This is raw. A young man smashing through with incredible and unique sonic ideas. It is not nearly as slick and polished as the AFX work. That stuff is too comfortable and becomes boring. This stuff pulls you back with its energy. A must-have.

Perfectly Crafted
I think this is one of Richard's best albums, it boasts a range of Ambient and Rhythmic sounds that are beautifully crafted. It is one of the better albums to listen to if you are new to Aphex Twin, you may even appreciate this album if you are more into classical music in that you would appreciate how nicely composed his melodies are. Owning this on Vinyl is a plus for me as it's the first LP of his i've bought and I simply love it :D

Imaginative if flawed Album
This is an album i'v wanted for some time. On purchasing it i'd say i have mixed feelings towards it. There are some great tracks on here but the album almost seams to be lacking a theme or any kind of consistancy. Owning some of his earlier EP's i found i owned some of the tracks already. Over all i prefered the "I care Because You Do" album that came before but this is a great album for a fan of the genius that is Richard D. James.
