I put a shirt on top and then wrap with another dry castor oil pack to prevent it from getting on my bed. It says you can wash them but I have never tried. I don’t think it’s worth the hassle or getting oil out and also the oil could contain toxins so if it is not fully clean, you don’t want to re-apply it to your skin and re-absorb it. That would defeat the purpose of the castor oil pack. To tell the truth, I have not cut the strings off my nail pad. I keep thinking I might need them sometime, however, I had a pair of comfortable biking shorts, and now I wear my pad to bed with my Earthing mat beneath me and my Castor oil pad stays in place! If you have constipation, this is really a useful comforting tool in your arsenal against it. All you have to do is put some organic castor oil in the center area. It will spread out on the soft side of the pad quite beautifully you must be careful to place it over the area you wish to treat whether it’s your liver or intestines before pulling the shorts up over it if you decide to use the strings, I’m sure that they will help but I can’t imagine they will help to keep the pad in place if you move around a lot as I do in your sleep. I have tied up the strings on either side and just took them in. Be careful to use a good grade of cast royale that comes in a glass bottle, not plastic.
