What took me so long to buy this awesome device?
I bought a plug-in hybrid car and added a 240 volt single phase home charger. Me, being the inquisitive type that I am, wanted to know exactly what it was costing me to charge my car at home. I tried a couple of devices before coming up with this shining example of technology. The first device would quit reading in the cold, and the second just was lazy and didn't want to work (kind of like some kids I know). Then I stumbled upon this Emporia device. It reads 16 circuits and allows me to monitor exactly how much each circuit uses in power. It tells usage by the second, minute, day, week, month, or year; your choice. You can see the amounts in graphs, or numbers as well as the time of day that the power is being used. This last item, is especially important if you have a staged pricing system for your electric that gives you better prices late at night, etc. Also it is particularly valuable for those with solar systems. You get real time info! It took me about 1.5 hours to install it but I would figure on the average consumer taking about 3 hours. I have worked as an electrician in the past. There are risks though to doing the install yourself. If you don't know what you are doing you could get shocked (also called "Break dancing lessons). Don't be discouraged. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is not an AMTRAC headed for you. Wearing rubber gloves greatly limits the risks. There are accurate and helpful tips in the VERY GOOD INSTRUCTIONS to help you stay safe. Of course you have to use those tips to make a difference. Also there is the option of baking some great cookies and luring your electrician friend to come and try out these yummy delights (don't forget to tell them they need to bring their tool belt along, just in case). Oh, and also save the beers until the install is DONE! :-) Now I have cumulative tracking, real time info, and some good resources to fill those long sleepless nights researching, calculating, and celebrating my successes. Truly, I don't know how they can produce this absolutely awesome product for the price they do! I have since, added another 16 line unit to completely track my shop, hot tub, garage and RV pad usage. Now I can stay up even longer at night pouring through even more of those delicious numbers figuring how I can save those dollars for my trip to Australia and New Zealand. Terrific Energy Monitor
I love the Emporia Vue 2 energy monitor. The monitor is the only monitor that provides detailed info on each individual circuit. Most monitors provide only the mains usage. The only near competitor to the Vue 2 is the Sense. However, I read too many negative reviews regarding the Sense's ability to determine what devices were being used in the house. The Vue 2 gives accurate information on each circuit. The Vue 2 matches my electrical bill regarding monthly usage per day and month. The total cost is off due to variation of end of month billing dates and add on utility company charges. The charts are functional and fine for my purposes. There is no API for to the feed data to an external program. You can download the raw data in CSV format if you want your own custom reporting. You can use the phone app or the website. You must login into the website to view your household information. I have not experienced any of the device or app issues that some people have reported. Tech support is awesome! They respond, know their stuff, and stay engaged until the issue is resolved. I did the installation myself. There are many You Tube videos that provide guidance. The instructions are simple, easy to follow, and accurate. The installation itself is easy and went relatively quickly. The breaker box will be a little crowded and messy unless you make an effort to wire-mind the cables. The Vue 2 can monitor only 16 circuits/breaker slots. I have 20 breaker slots occupied and 2 mains, so my Vue 2 is full. If you have more than 16 breakers and some are dual pole breakers, you can save a Vue 2 slot by monitoring 1 pole of the dual pole breaker and use a circuit multiplier of 2. If you still have additional breakers to monitor, you will need a second Vue 2 and "nest" the 2nd device under the 1st device. Contact Emporia support for additional questions. It is critical that you understand that when the main breaker is pulled the individual circuits to the house are dead BUT the mains that come from the utility pole into the breaker box are still live and dangerous. If you are not comfortable working around high voltage hire an electrician. Note: Make sure he records the breaker number and breaker amps to Vue 2 circuit number (explained below). Also make sure he dresses the cables neatly. After all he is a professional! As you make the connections you need to record the breaker number and what Vue 2 circuit number the breaker is connected to. This is important since you will need the information to set up the circuits in the monitor software. Once I had the device hooked up and working, I then determined what was connected to each breaker and corresponding Vue 2 circuit by turning on each household device one at a time (A/C, clothes washer, etc.) or by going to each wall outlet and plugging in a portable device that required noticeable watts. By observing what Vue 2 circuit showed an increase in usage I was able to develop a device mapping to Vue 2 circuit number to breaker number. In the VUE 2 software I labeled each Vue 2 circuit with the associated device name, the breaker number, and the breaker amps. This allowed me to have a breaker number to Vue 2 circuit number to device mapping with the circuit amps. The only downside to the Vue 2 is the AMPs reporting. As far as i can tell the individual mains and circuits are correctly reported in AMPs. However, the total of the mains is incorrectly calculated by totaling the two mains. This can be done for Watts/KW but not for AMPs since totaling ignores whether the result is from a 120 or 240 circuit if only 1 leg is being monitored. Either use the main with the biggest AMP usage or total the individual Vue 2 circuits to get a decent estimate. Emporia support says they want to fix this issue but there is no timeline. Yes I would buy this product again and recommend it to a friend.

Valuable Tool
I purchased this to have an idea about the energy use in our home. I had considered other brands of Energy Monitors but after purchasing the Smart EV Charger by Emporia I decided to go with their product. Installation was not difficult, but it was slightly time consuming (took me around 2 hours). It does require shutting OFF your main breaker, this removes electrical power to all of your circuit breakers, BUT IT DOES NOT REMOVE ALL POWER FROM THE PANEL! The power from the meter is still present up to that main power breaker. My panel is a 200AMP panel with a solar tie in on the main lines above the main breaker. Wanting to monitor my solar generation as well required that I use TWO of the 50A circuit monitors (make sure you designate the circuit type as SOLAR). This left me with only 14 circuits to monitor. I choose to monitor my largest loads (oven, A/C, well pump, dryer, refrigerator, etc...). Now while some of my circuits are NOT monitored specifically, the system still calculated TOTAL use and if you have Solar configured properly it will give you your Net Use as well. Placing the sensors on the appropriate circuits is rather simple, just make sure the sensor is oriented properly (there's an arrow that points to the breaker. Attaching the 200AMP sensors to the main lines and the 50AMP sensors to the Solar are the most stressful as lethal high voltage is present . ( I highly recommend that you purchase electrical safety gloves.) You also need to connect the "hub" to power. For my panel set up I needed to attach it to two adjacent breakers and the other two to the neutral bar. They prefer you connect to two EMPTY breakers, but I have NONE. The alternative is to tap in to the loads on two adjacent breakers (they even give you two small pieces of solid core wire for this purpose. This means you need to remove the wire from the breaker, insert the small wire into the breaker and re-tighten it, then connect the small wire, the wire you removed from the breaker and the wire leading to the "hub"... you can use a wire nut (provided in kit) or I opted to use a lever lock nut (much easier). You also need to knockout a hole for the wifi antenna. Now my panel is VERY crowded to begin with and the sensors are a little bulky, it took some finessing to be able to get the panel cover on again. Energize the panel to start the system setup ( note- if you have solar, shut the solar system down util setup is complete). Now it is important to know that NO INSTRUCTIONS ARE INCLUDED. The installation is ALL APP GUIDED, so you need to have the app downloaded prior to starting. One disappointing thing I found in their setup is that it DOES NOT ADDRESS SOLAR at all. Having researched the product prior to purchase I had an idea of HOW it was incorporated into the system. The app offers LIVE CHAT if you need help, but this is evidently limited as no one was available on a Saturday morning when I tried to use it. But I did find the answer to my question on their website. PRO-TIP: Plan out which circuits you plan to monitor before starting. WRITE THEM DOWN. Make sure you know what monitor is connect to which breaker and to which number on the "hub". Also, with the panel power off you will have NO LIGHTS, have an alternative lighting ready. So far I have found the monitoring system very useful and informative. It is pretty user friendly though there is room for improvement. This is definitely an easy project for a DIYer who is comfortable working within an electrical power panel. IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE HIGHER AN ELECTRICIAN. Overall, I Highly Recommend!

Don't know if I love this.... I DO!
Purchased this to monitor our Barn Sub-Panel, a recent addition to the house. It's a 1500sq/ft building with two 18k BTU mini spits, 800w of LED overhead lights, 2 post lift, full wood shop, welding outlet, etc. There's eight 240v circuits and eight120v circuits in the subpanel this was installed in. Install was straight forward, but if you're not comfortable working in an electrical panel, I'd recommend letting a licensed electrician do it. I wired the subpanel and the barn, but am not a licensed electrician, it's all inspected Rough and Final, but different jurisdictions have different rules about is legally allowed to do electrical work on their home. On to the review - Well, it definitely muddies up a clean electrical panel with the sensors and their wires but it's not too bad. If your panel has a TON of excess wire and is very full, this is going to be a tough installation. Once installed the set up is pretty straight forward and the instructions to do so work well. For each 240v circuit (two 120v legs) only one sensor is needed and the software in the app can be set to multiply the value by two; this in principal works great on things like Mini splits or a dust collector for example. However some 240v devices will have 120v items that will run between one of the 120v legs and a neutral wire, so if it's monitoring the leg being used for that 120v item, it's going to double it's usage and if it's monitoring the other leg, it won't measure the usage. This isn't that big of a problem, the 120v items on these types of circuits are hour meters or small control boards, etc. but it can create some inconsistencies. The view of everything is eye opening and that's why I'm not sure I love it.... but I do. It's very helpful to know what things cost. For example the network (security cameras, network switch, wireless AP's and related) are operating at able 2kw/hr's a day (a little less than a normal 80w systained draw. For me, it's $0.32/day to run the Barn's network. HVAC usage as well being able to see it is helpful to know if it's worth the cost to keep the barn warm or just warm it up when I use it. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this, it's price point over other brands is a bonus. Since purchasing this, we've also added four of the US Smart plugs from emporia that do the energy monitoring and are just as happy with them. We'll likely be adding two additional 16 circuit monitors to our two existing 200a service entrance panels.

Great way to monitor electric usage
This is an excellent product and it comes with great support and customer service also. I like it so much I bought a second one for Mom's home - which is where things went wrong (but appears that this may be due to someone buying a Gen2 and doing a return putting their old original first-generation Vue in the new box and then Amazon sending it to me as 'new'.) For the real product that I did get earlier (direct from Emporia) - Packaging: Wow - it's beautiful. Documentation: Clear and concise. Android app: Very good (I'd like to see some tweaks here and there, but it works and gives you access to all the usage details.) Installation: I respect electricity and don't like getting shocked! But, it really wasn't difficult to safely install on live panel. I took my time and was careful. Support: Accessible and responsive - both phone and email. Price: Good! What more could you ask for? I've always wanted to know how much electricity things were using and have a Kill-A-Watt which works well for things that plug in. But, what about things like lights on switches, heat pumps, cooktops, etc? This device will let you see your total usage on everything, and up to 16 different individual circuits. And since the app shows usage on the whole home and any individual circuit in real time 1-second intervals, it's quite easy to see electric usage even on circuits that power multiple things. For example, a typical breaker may shut off power to all the lights in one or more rooms. Either have all the lights off and turn just the one you want to check on - or, if other lights on circuit are also on, just use the difference between the usage on that circuit from the amount with and without the light you want to measure being 'on'. Same technique can be used for receptacle circuits. With the Emporia Vue I was able to see: my modern washing machine draws about 6 watts constantly when it's 'Off'. Oral-B toothbrush chargers draw more than 5 watts constantly if plugged in, with or without a toothbrush on the charger - there's basically no difference if you charge a toothbrush or not. My central A/C draws 10 watts less when my smart Sensi thermostat has it 'off' than when it's in 'cool' but not running. These are all little things, but they add up on things that run 24x7. Reduce 24x7 demand by 100 watts, and that's 72kWh per month. In Hawaii at about 25 cents per kWh, that's $18/month! The Vue will also give you insight into the big things as well - the usage of electric water heater, clothes dryer, cooktop, oven, etc. I'm glad I bought this, and I'm also glad to see some delays in availability - demand for the product is picking up as more people realize what this can do for their energy awareness/conservation, and hopefully allows Emporia to be successful and continue to offer this at a reasonable price! (It does require Internet/cloud to work and continue working.)

Amazing Product, Great Learning Tool
I purchased this in March of 2021, and have enjoyed this product very much since then. The real time data logging is great, and can really help find areas that use excess electricity. Was pretty easy to setup in the breaker panel. Cut main breaker, installed unit, installed clamps, and then closed breaker box and powered up. One of my sensors was defective, and the company sent me one right away, free of charge. Everything worked perfectly after that. I initially did not have an EV, though in August I got one and this thing has been amazing at tracking energy usage for the EV. Was very easy in the software to rearrange a clamp and set it up for the EV charger. I ended up removing one that was a pretty unused circuit anyways. I am also a big fan of being able to export the data into CVV format. I have built a spreadsheet that breaks down monthly usage and % by circuit. I have also plotted an hour graph which shows me when my peak times of electricity use are during the day. Not necessary, but it helps me learn about my usage. A couple points of improvement I would wish for the future: 1) the export to CVV is completely manual. Not a big deal, but when I want to update my spreadsheets, it takes a few minutes to export and append into the spreadsheet. 2) I wish they had more support in terms of smart homes. Would be nice if there was an API that could be read from. It seems the app is the only way to read from the device in a live fashion. Would be nice if it featured a self-hosted server with all of the live data accessible from other sources. Overall a great product for an amazing price. App is pretty solid, device seems to work great, and quality customer service. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to understand or learn from their energy usage habits!

Very Impressed and better than expected
I like everything about this product and I enjoy using it; - Very easy to install, see Pics - Solid WiFi connection - Good instructions - App is very responsive, no failures or glitches - Almost real-time, very impressive - Flawless CSV downloads - Alerts work well Actual benefits; - able to identify a total of 142W of phantom load = ~$180 CAD/yr for a payback of ~1.5 years - able to quantify the max hot tub load @ -22C (1,225W) and move the deicing cable from a lighting circuit to the dedicated 120V hot tub circuit, so now it is monitored - able to demonstrate that our new hyper-efficient gas furnace is consuming an average 62W more than the previous unit, so I have engaged the vendor to determine why - identified the the top consumers, not sure what I can do about it yet, but at least I know now Couple of points; - will need to use 2 CTs on 240V circuits for accurate measurement, e.g. a dryer motor only uses one of the phases, so if you use one CT and double the multiplier the results will be inaccurate. I moved a CT so now both phases are monitored - I had to mount the unit inside the panel to reach the mains. Two 16 sensor units would not fit inside a typical fully loaded panel, however I could mount them externally by using one unit on the left side and one on the right side. I have 42 active circuits but only 15 are monitored so another unit would significantly reduce if not eliminate the balance of 31% - I spent an entire day tracing all the circuits so I knew where to best allocate the 16 CTs, and I now have a detailed map - I download a CSVs weekly and archive them as they are very small ZIP files - I look forward to future App/backend enhancements WELL DONE Emporia!! Update 2022-11-27 - It's been about ~11 months now and this product has worked flawlessly, this has got to be one of the best products I've ever purchased. I expected some glitches and idiosyncrasies but to my surprise, it always works, it is fun to use and quite informative. For example, I didn't expect that our hot tub is by far the largest individual consumer @ ~14% after 11 months or ~$215 CAD/yr and we only use it during the summer although it runs all year. That is really surprising given that it is a small tub connected to a 120V circuit. The "Balance" @ ~22% includes all devices on all circuits that are not monitored. Update 2025-01-07 - It been a touch over 4 years now, and everything is working great. I have moved a couple of CTs and bought a 4 pack of the smart plugs, which also work very well, but are limited to a continuous 400W. I recently moved the controller outside the panel to reduce congestion and so it is more accessible. Ideally, I would prefer to install all components outside the panel, properly tagged of course, but that is very installation specific.

Probably the best energy monitor on the market.
Having just dropped a sizeable chunk of our savings on 8.5kW of solar PV and a Tesla Powerwall, we've gotten very conscious of energy use in our home. I wanted a way to measure individual circuit consumption, and after trawling the internet, looking at the technologies and reading reviews, I decided that the Emporia Vue 2 was probably the best bet. Firstly, it's very accurate, as in +/- 1% accuracy from my experience so far. Being mains powered rather than battery powered, the unit can reference the measured circuit phase angle to give very accurate power consumption. Secondly, it's easy to install and setup, though UK consumer units pose certain challenges. More on that later... Thirdly, the App is really well thought out, easy to use, provides a phenomenal level of granularity and is easy to export .CSV data to manipulate in Excel for instance. The level of detail available will easily satisfy even the nerdiest of nerds! Rather than install the first unit in the house, I opted to install it in my garden Office/Workshop/ManCave so that I could tinker around, figure out how it all works and determine the best way to fit it without disrupting the main house supply. SWMBO works long hours from home, much of the time on conference calls, so killing the power/internet/network regularly whilst tinkering wasn't a viable option. The biggest challenge I had is that UK consumer units just don't have much free space in them. Just getting the sensors in there is a fairly tight fit. Trying to shoe-horn the excess sensor cabling, the unit itself and the wi-fi cable into my CU was impossible, so I had to get a little creative. In the end, I opted to mount the unit externally to the CU. I used one of the bottom, 20mm knock-outs, drilled it out to ~23mm and fitted a PG16 gland, which was just big enough to fiddle the (5) sensor plugs and power cables through. I also snipped the heatshrink off the WiFi lead and unscrewed the antenna from the cable, then fitted the antenna directly to the main unit. The unit has no wall mounts, so a few adhesive velcro pads hold it in place. One item the instructions don't cover is UK final ring circuits (ring mains). Reading between the lines in the instructions, you'd think that clamping 1 wire and using a 2.0 X multiplier would be the correct approach, right? Wrong. Ring circuits rarely balance properly. It depends very much on the circuit load and how close it is to one end of the ring vs the other. The right approach is to clamp both wires and use a 1.0 X multiplier. CT sensors measure Total current passing through the sensor, so will measure the sum of the current passing through each wire. Fitting this way gives much more accurate readings. The unit is really easy to configure. Connecting to WiFi is easy and the App is very intuitive. If you want to properly monitor power consumption in your home then this is by far the best option on the market.

よくある最近のパナソニックのコスモコンパクト21にとりつけしましたがctセンサーのスペースに苦戦 上部は余裕がありますが下のL2側はちょっとでもブレーカーより上に出ると蓋が閉まりません 本体の電源はブレーカーに開きがあったので直取りし 青と赤線はオープン(未接続) アプリ上で同一で線で繋がっているというようなメッセージがでますが無視し進めることができます。 また、データはクラウド上にあるようでスマホからどこでも見られ便利。 問題点 CTセンサーの作りが悪く動かないものが1つあったCTセンサーは多めの物を買いましょう 200V計測に 白(L1)、黒(L2)それぞれにctセンサーをつけ計測できますがまとめて消費電力が表示されないのでそれそれのポートで同数の出力が表示されみずらい 追記 HomeAssistantで取得可能です。

Fantastic device
You need space in your distribution board to fit the sensors. I have 16 fitted, it would be great if it could extend further but that is the limit. I have it installed 10 months and the data is most helpful to understand your usage. From the usage pattern I was able to see how my heat pump was not operating efficiently and I made programming changes to the heat pump that saved me over 80 euro per month during the heating season. The data goes to the company’s servers and you read the data from there. This may be a problem if they ever start charging for the service. But for now it is free. Do independent research yourself if you are concerned about this aspect. But for my application, I am delighted.
