Real industrial grade performance
I recommend this item if you need a real industrial grade performance. This item comes without a power adapter, which makes the perfect sense to me.For general purpose it works without a power adapter as usual passive USB HUB.To take advantage of the surge protection of this item you need to power it up.As described in the technical details you may use DC power supply from 7V to 48V, which obviously makes a difference in the cost, so the customer can choose the right one.I specifically needed an industrial grade of performance, as previously I had about a dozen of USB HUBs, but even a best one of them still "kicks out" some connected devices when I connect a Dual-Dock with 2 14GB disks in it.I bought power supply (DC 48 V, 3.5 V, 120 W). Following instructions - it took 20 minutes to connect power to this item. I am using this item for the first day, very intensively. So far - even under the extreme conditions, utilizing all 7 ports, including the Dual-Dock with 2 x 3.5" disks - no "kick outs".I bought another (4-port) StarTech.com 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub - for my other PC. Both HUBs work at industrial grade performance.

When you need a high quality ESD hardened Hub, this is the one.
I have a test bench that uses a *lot* of USB based test equipment, and even with ESD mats and sprays, I always seemed to damage my USB 3 hubs with static discharges, or iffy units under test. I have used the StarTech USB 2.0 hardened hubs for years, and have yet to have a single failure. So, I added in one of their USB 3 units to the mix. It has worked flawlessly and the ability to run from just about any voltage source is a big plus.

High Quality
Definitely the way to go if you are looking for a USB hub. Purchased multiple times and have had no issues with these units.

It is really nice to have a metal-encased USB3 hub that accepts a wide range of voltages for powering USB devices! It is an excellent match for a West Mountain Radio RigRunner, and I pull power for the hub from the RigRunner, and power the whole thing from a 13.8 power supply. Keeping everything on one power supply keeps connections and portability easy.

Great Product
I use it in my observatory as a hub for everything on the telescope. That way I only need one cable. It is subjected to nighttime humidity. I do protect it with a plastic bag when the observatory is closed so it is not in a condensing environment

Excellent for outdoor usage with one small flaw
I bought this USB 3.0 hub for use with some astrophotography equipment. I have used it in all manner of conditions ranging down to temperatures as low as -15F and the high dew conditions of a Wisconsin summer which had water basically dripping on my equipment. It has handled all these conditions reliably and superbly - no other hub I've tried worked this well. One small flaw - the 12V DC power connection terminal on the hub doesn't hold on tightly enough to the wires; it is a connection where you tighten a screw to hold the wire in place. The wire has a tendency to slip out and periodically needs to be reinserted and screws tightened. Apart from this one flaw, I am really happy with this hub.
