The problems of the British may be ending but for the new state of Israel they're just beginning. Israel is surrounded by hostile Arab nations and must fight to defend itself from aggression. The Israeli defense force, the Haganah, has received intelligence that Arab forces, Syria in particular, are employing former German Panzer commander General Gustav Schiller to train them in tank tactics against Israel. The Israelis also learn that General Schiller's wife, Judith Auerbach Schiller, is a Jewish woman who was betrayed by her husband and was left to die in a concentration camp. Judith has survived the camp and is searching for her husband to exact revenge and to locate their son. The Haganah decides to find Judith and use her knowledge in order to locate the general, positively identify him and make him reveal the Syrian attack plans. Judith is smuggled into Israel and hidden in a kibbutz under the care of Haganah commander Aaron Stein. Life in the kibbutz is not easy for Judith, work is hard, safety is not guaranteed and she grows impatient and frustrated. Haganah leaders suggest to her that the British may have a file on her husband, like on most war criminals, and it may contain his latest whereabouts. However, this means Judith may have to ingratiate herself with the local British commander, Major Lawton, who has access to the files. When Major Lawton finally succumbs to the charms of sensual Judith he hands over the file to her. Unfortunately, General Gustav Schiller's last whereabouts are in Damascus, Syria. Learning about Israel's independence day on ours was amazing. I loved the story
We watched this on July4! Learning about Israel's independence day on ours was amazing. I loved the story, the action, the results. I am not very familiar with Sophia Loren's movies and don't usually watch older movies, but was looking for a free movie and am glad I found this one. I love and support Israel, Shalom Israel, Shalom Jerusalem.

if you liked "Exodus" you wiill like "Judith" as well.
Involving, well acted, written, directed and photographed. Of course it takes some liberties with fact, in order to provide a coherent storyline, and motivation for the characters, but overall it is an engrossing and good film with something for everyone: action/war sequences, romance, location settings. If l you liked ""Exodus" (film based on the Leon Uris book with Eva Marie Saint) then you will also like "Judith" --it's more tightly focused on a smaller group of characters, but the post-war creation of the state of Israel--and a collision between a soldier and a woman who are initially at odds, later discovering they have more in common than dividing them.

Sophia Loren is glamorous even in khakis!
Sophia Loren plays her objective with passion and her trademark sex appeal! Peter Finch and Jack Hawkins are equally believable. The story is compelling and rather timely. It's a bit dated in terms of production values but very suspenseful and insightful into the birth of the nation of Israel and how fraught that event was with important personal events taking place contemporaneously.

JUDITH is a move worth watching
We really learned a lot about Israel, and the suffering of the Jews after the Second World War. Sophia Loren was married to a Nazi General, who was responsible for exterminating many Jews. They were still married, but seriously estranged. She helped the Israelis find him in Istanbul. The story was engrossing and well done. I learned that EXODUS was the ship to bring some of the Israelis from other countries to Israel.

An interesting film, worth watching for the characters.
It's obviously a movie from the perspective of a different era. And it isn't what I would call a classic. Nevertheless, the acting and directing and production is very good, and it provides one interesting view into a particular period of time. Sophia Loren and Peter Finch are both excellent. I would watch it from the perspective of when it was created, which was the mid 60s. The quality of the film streaming itself is a little on the poor side.

Good film about Israel's fight to become a country
Realistically, if you wanted to become a German general you probably wouldn't have married a Jewish woman during the Nazi era. On the other hand, if she looked like Sophia Loren perhaps that would have been a chance worth taking.

A Woman's Quest for Independence.
A woman seeks revenge against a highly idealistic and fanatical husband who has betrayed and abandoned. This woman story reflects the rise of the state of Israel, a nation created from a group of people dedicated to seek revenge and independence on a World which has long betrayed and abandoned them.

Behind The Shades Judith Has Action and Scope
Featuring Sophia and some top British stars, "Judith" is a story about the tenacity and strength of nation-building disguised as a revenge movie. In true 60's style it does take a while to fully engage, but about twelve minutes in Judith arrives in Palastine in the most horrible way possible to find revenge against a Nazi tank commander who is now commanding a force of Arab tanks that will, in a few short days, pour over the borders into the new State of Israel and destroy the struggling nation. Battle scenes are full-blooded and the plot to get Judith to help the Jews instead of taking revenge into her own hands is well written and pulls you in pretty good. Balancing the film is the great Jack Hawkins as a British military commander trying to stiffle his own humanity in order to deal with the crisis and keep the Jews from destroying their own goals. Storytelling like this does take awhile and will never hold the attentions of "Transformer"- loving kids, but if even they hang in it takes hold and delivers very well. Look beyond Sophia's drop-dead gorgeous looks and you'll find a performace that rish and layered. The wide-screen Panavision movie is formatted to regular TVs and must have been a TV print but no matter, this is a near-great film and extremely difficult to find. Bravo to Amazon Prime for making it available. PS- the soundtrack music is awesome and just became available on CD from Screen Archives Entertainment!
