The instructions say that you should throw out any unused product, but I only used 1/4 of the jar! Do I really need to throw it out?

For the tubs of semipermanent dye, no, you do not need to do that. I've literally used the same tub for years when I was making my own toner. Use a separate bowl when dying your hair and use a clean utensil to scoop the product out of the jar, so that you don't contaminate the product. It might get thick and clumpy when it gets old but you can thin it out again with water (distilled or RO is best). If it starts smelling bad, throw it out.

How long do you have leave it in my hair?

I always leave mine overnight. It lasts VERY long. I've even had the lagoon blue last over a month doing that. Leaving it on for less than an hour has it washing out FAST. My niece never leaves it on for more than an hour and her colors fade extremely fast compared to mine.

can foil be used if you are not wanting to color your whole head?

if you want it bright you have to bleach. it will take without bleaching it will be a dark color though.
