How do you clean the plastic stem? They stain horribly with coffee use. I wish they were metal.

I just fill the sink with warm water and some bleach and let it set. It helps but it still have some color in it. The more often you do this (once a week under heavy use) the better.

Is this airtight so bugs cannot go in and is spill proof?

bugs can't get in. wouldn't say it's spill proof.
