ViewSonic VG1655 15.6 Inch 1080p Portable Monitor for Laptop, USB C IPS

Working from home, and wanting to be able to work in more than one place at home, has caused me to contend with some unique challenges. It's hard to get a lot of what I need to do done with just one screen, but unless I'm at my desk it's a bit tricky to have multiple displays. So I finally decided it was time to get one of these displays and there were a few reasons I was drawn to the ViewSonic. One, I'm a fan of their products. ViewSonic has been around ages and I've used their monitors off and on throughout the years, so I expected something with fairly good build and image quality. On these points, the display did not disappoint. The kickstand is thoughtful, allowing the monitor to be used horizontally or vertically. The overall build of the monitor feels solid, and the slim bezels are nice. Fortunately, as is standard for these, the thicker bezel is at the bottom which puts the display at a similar height to my laptop's screen. Additionally, one of the things that I preferred about this about a number of competing products is the subdued brand labeling on the front. Bright, shiny, or chrome logos are just obnoxious in my opinion (coincidentally, the ViewSonic monitors I have at my WFH station have a dark matte gray logo on a black bezel *chefs kiss*). The controls are straightforward and the interface is not too dissimilar from my other ViewSonic displays. Along with the sturdy cover, this is easy to pack and protect. I wouldn't subject it to any abuse as it is still just a fairly exposed screen, even with the cover on it. The cover seems to have traded a softer or friendlier feel for being sturdier, however it does also serve nicely as a mat to place under the monitor when in use to keep it in place and prevent the housing from scuffing up whatever table you're using it on. The scuff or scratch risk is worth calling out here. The metal kickstand feels like it'd pretty easily gouge a table or other surface, so using the cover as a base is recommended if you want to ensure that doesn't happen. You are paying a premium for the ViewSonic brand, but you also get a 3 year warranty and hopefully the reliability I'd usually expect from ViewSonic. The display includes everything you need: a collection of USB cables, microfiber cloth, and a power adapter that conveniently allows it to provide up to 60W of power to whatever device you connect to it. Picture quality is perfectly fine for the application. It matches a decent IPS laptop screen but can't keep up with the best in terms of color and doesn't offer 4K (which I've grown to find unnecessary on displays this size anyway). I wouldn't have expected anything more from it given the price, so there's no disappointment there.

Purchased this monitor for my wife. She works in finance and when at off-site meetings with other associates, needs more screen area than a 16" laptop provides. This helps her immensely. Cabling up this monitor is also nice due to the multiple options available. She is also able to power the monitor through her laptop, so she need not worry about also packing the power adapter. Quality of the image is also very good. Color hue is a bit different from her laptop, but this can be expected, and is not a problem. Sharpness and resolution is also very good. I have used other Viewsonic monitors in the past. Their quality and reliability have always been very good.

The monitor is perfect for travel as it is very light, fits snugly along with the laptop in the backpack, comes with a magnetic lid to protect the glass screen, has a nice built-in kickstand to set up with any tilt anywhere and looks elegant. Also when you are not traveling, you can use it as one more screen if you are crazy about multiple displays like me. Picture quality and brightness are great for productivity. But all these great features are offset by bulky adapter, cables and lack of commonly used USB and HDMI interfaces. The power adapter is scary big but luckily you can do without it by connecting to the laptop USB port that powers the display. Never heard of a mini HDMI interface until I bought this product. The problem with such uncommon interface is that you have to buy HDMI to mini HDMI adapters. They provide you with such an adapter cable but it is so thick with two cylinders on either end which I don't know for what reason. They could have provided miracast feature to make this a wireless display. I succeeded in turning this into a wireless display using Microsoft display adapter but required two adapters because of the lack of common interfaces. While USB type C is becoming popular, still traditional USB interface is quite useful. Also, I have seen regular HDMI port in devices smaller than this so I don't why they had to force a mini HDMI port on us. But I will give them credit for making both the USB C ports providing power output which made using the Microsoft wireless adapter possible

The construction and included cover are great. This is probably not for gaming but for my use it's perfect. I'm using this as a small TV for my dining room table. Plugged in a Chromecast using an HDMI adapter. Picture is clear and sharp and brightness is good for my well lit room with abundant sunlight from windows. Not the best contrast but it's fine for watching TV. I recommend this for anyone using as a second monitor for productivity or just watching videos. It included an HDMI cable to go from the mini to full size, you'll need an adapter to plug a Chromecast or other device with a built in HDMI. Also came with a really short USB-C power cord, I used my own and it works fine.

Most portable monitors from the "big names" are USB-C only, which is a problem for those of us who wish to use them with hobbyist/maker gear like the Raspberry Pi instead of a traditional laptop. Options with HDMI support seem to be mostly limited to no-name off-brands. It is thus refreshing to see this model from an established and well-respected major brand. The standout features are very easy-to-use joystick-style controls and an integrated aluminum stand. Unlike most of the competition, which expects you to prop up your monitor on a flimsy faux-leather folio or a tiny little fold-out kickstand, nearly the entire bottom half of the aluminum case folds out to make for a very stable support. The picture is excellent, at least by the standards of the sort of browsing, productivity, and software development work that I do. While I am quite happy with this monitor, I also own a pair of Acer PM161Q monitors which are currently selling for almost half the price of the VG1655. If you're on a budget and don't mind the usual folio-stand arrangement, it may be hard to justify the higher cost of the VG1655. Another point to note is that the power supply is closer in size to a laptop power brick than to the usual phone-charger cube. I believe this is to better support the feature of the monitor whereby it can provide power to other devices over a USB-C cable. The monitor does not need all of the power that the power supply can provide, and can itself be powered by another device capable of delivering 10W to it.

I got my new ViewSonic VG1655 today and I just love it. Most people will use this to connect to a laptop as a second monitor, but in my case, I got it to go with my Corsair ONE PRO i200 tower PC and Dell U2520DR 25" desktop monitor. I went for the VG1655 because my current setup basically affords absolutely no more space for another full-size monitor (which I would've gotten if I did). But no fear, this one totally fits the bill. Screen real estate is generous given it's a portable monitor and the resolution is really good. I ran into a glitch with connecting to the tower PC — this was because I thought all I had to do was connect the provided USB-C to USB-C cable to both devices, but NOPE. I was getting a "no signal" error. What I had to do was connect to an available DisplayPort on the tower PC's *graphics card* (which already has the Dell monitor connected to it). But glitch #2 was that the only other cable the VG1655 comes with is a mini-HDMI to HDMI. I ended up running out to Best Buy and grabbing a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Once I had that snapped onto the business end of provided mini-HDMI to HDMI cable and connected it to an open DisplayPort on the tower's graphics card, the connection was instantaneous. Really happy!! (See photo.) Definitely recommend.

Don’t bother. Spend the extra to get something higher quality and save yourself the trouble. This has never worked right, even with help from my IT dept. 1080p is in the name of the monitor, but I’ve had no luck getting that setting to stick for longer than a couple of hours. And today, black screen. I’ve only had this monitor for a few weeks.

I bought this monitor so I could have more screen space while traveling doing remote work. It is an excellent little monitor for a great price! I easily connect it for power and video feed from either my Windows laptop or Mac using USB-C. Additionally, I think it is a good looking product that melds nicely with my computer setup. I wouldn’t necessarily want to use it for gaming or watching videos, as the picture doesn’t quite have the vibrancy I would want; however, for work it is phenomenal.

Connects very simply via USB-C direct to my laptop - this one connection provides power and the display signal. Very light and portable, great way to add a second screen while you are travelling or working remotely.
