A French Village: The Complete Series

You will not see a better TV programme - ever.
I have just finished the last one of 72 episodes of this outstanding French WW2 drama series. I am 55-years old and have never seen anything like it. The only way I can describe it is a cross between Heimat - the old German series from the 1980s - and Secret Army. The characters in this show are simply amazing, full of changing morals as the tide of the war ebbs and flows. Do you resist? Do you collaborate? Do you ride the wave and see which way the water runs? That is the moral complexity of this series. Even the SD officer, Heinrich Muller is both chilling and charismatic in equal measures, making him truly an evil figure. If you like boring Hollywood type 'good guy' 'bad guy' kind of programming then look away. If, however, you like delving into the shades of grey in humanity, then buy this as soon as you can. In French but with large English subtitles. Mine played fine on a multi-region DVD player (you can also play it on a Playstation if you change the region on the player). You may also like Days of Honour - the Polish WW2 series that is nearly as good as this.

Worth watching for sure……
Ok, so it’s in French with subtitles but you get used to that and it might even improve your language skills. A riveting series which only lets itself down a little by stretching out its last series a little too far. If you look hard enough on Google, you can find a Region 2 copy to play on standard UK DVD/Blue Ray equipment.

DVD does not play on multi region player.
Even if you have a multi-region DVD player and compatible TV, these discs do not play in the UK. Have had to return. A pity as I was looking forward to watching this series.

Stunning, gripping French war drama
How has this not been broadcast on British TV? Exceptional TV drama by any standard and a great counterweight to the Anglo view of the war. Great ensemble performances and shot like a movie.

Item is lost in transit
The movie series finally did arrive and I have to give it five stars now. I meant for this to be used to refresh my French and after watching the first 4 episodes I can verify that I am improving. The series itself is also fascinating and keeps my attention. It is one of the best movie series that I have ever seen. That said, I want to clear up something I mentioned previously which has been noted as a confusion by many others. Some sellers note this as having 30 discs and 72 episodes and others say 26 discs and some say 64 episodes. Here is what I received: The printed box of the set says 30 discs. Inside I found there were 26 discs. I do not think it is a edited or censored set though because I also counted at least 71 episodes. Probably there are 72 but I did not recount. Seasons 6 and 7 both have fewer episodes than the others. So, vendors who are advertising 30 discs are probably just reading what is on the box. It is a great series just for the movie alone. As French language learning prop let me just say that it has been over 35 years since I have done much with French language. During episode 1 the English subtitles were about what I understood. French spoken by native speakers seems very fast. In later episodes I started to understand French more often. When the Germans in the movie speak French, they speak much more s l o w l y and clearly much as we did in High School French classes. and so were easier to understand. By episode 4 I was picking up quite a bit of it. Also I am not using other materials at this time. The best part of using the movie for language learning is that you have native French speakers. This is a good movie for the purpose. Also there is no English audio track that I can find on these discs. The audio language is French with a little German spoken by German soldiers. The French is subtitled and subtitles are automatically on. The small amount of spoken German is not subtitled. The movie, aside from the language, is absolutely great. This is a village of French friends who step up to help each other during a war occupation. For example, when a Jewish woman is fired for being Jewish, the village finds a place for her to live. Bill

DVD was in French
I was really looking forward to this DVD but found that it was in French with English sub titles. I would find this difficult to watch. Sorry, but not what I am able to watch.

Overall, a great series about a murky, confusing period in history
This French-produced series (with English subtitles) is a thrilling recount of the period when France was occupied during WW II as well as its aftermath. It is well done, highlighting the moral dilemmas faced by people in different positions as well as the variety of “shades of grey” of the behaviors that people, good and bad, engaged in during the period.
