Status Quo s album Pictures (released in November 2008) celebrated 40 years of Status Quo filling the UK charts with hit after hit. The album was an instant success, charting at No.8 and selling over a quarter of a million copies in the UK alone. In July 2009 the Pictures live tour landed at Montreux in Switzerland as part of the world famous festival. The band, led as always by the twin Telecasters of Francis Rossi & Rick Parfitt, delivered a blistering set of hits and classic tracks from across their career including no less than 18 UK Top 20 hits. Huge screens behind the stage illustrated high points from Quo s career and the usually reserved Swiss crowd were rockin all over the Stravinski Auditorium! Review: like most people do when they get older - Status Quo..what can you say? The guitarheroes Parfitt and Rossi changed hairstyles, like most people do when they get older. The rest just gets better. But let`s forget about those two at the moment. Let`s start at the back of the stage with Letley on drums. His style and sound suit the Quo-style perfect. There have been drummers before that were just as good, but being able to fit in with Quo you have to know your place and what the "happy" sound of Quo is, and Letley play the songs like he should, but he doesn`t try to copy the ones before him, he has his own style. Then you got Brown handling keys, more guitars and backing vocals. In a band that play songs with a lot of energy and A LOT of sound like Quo, you need the multitalented guy who give the songs some spice. A good steak is nothing if there's no spice or sauce. You need that extra something for it to taste good. Rhino is not only enjoying himself on stage, but his connection with the fans/crowd is something some bands struggle with. When the people ON stage really look like they have a good time, the crowd usually do to. Rhinos bassplaying surprised me when I first heard him in Quo. As a teenager when "In the army now" was released I started to work my way back in the Quo discography. I`ve always loved what Steve Harris do in Iron Maiden, Geezer in Sabbath and so on, but Rhino made his bass a part of the band. He wasn`t showing off with solos and such, but he was part of the massive rock sound of Quo. It was like a major part of the foundation of the bands sound, and THAT is he does so brilliantly at Montreux in 2009. Rossi says in an interview he`s nervous to go on stage. I think he said he`d rather go home, but once he`s up there: He loves it. There was a man named Elvis Presley, if someone can remember him...who said almost the same thing. There are other artists/performers who are exactly the same. The thing they got in common is they`re fantastic on stage. Their presence is so great, and so important to the band, there is no way it could be done without them. They own the stage. To me, Rossi is a fantastic guitarplayer and a good singer but he`s also someone on stage that the crowd loves. He can just look at them and smile and I`m sure they`ll go home smiling for a month. The point is that Rossi could be your neighbor up on stage. He`s "one of us", just a bit more talented when it comes to performing :-) A lot of this could be said for Parfitt as well. Down to earth guy in interviews, he`s as far from a diva on stage you`ll ever get etc. BUT, his guitarsound is unique. You can go on for days mentioning famous rhythm guitarplayers, but to me there are TWO who deserve the credit to be the best in the business. Parfitt of Quo and Malcolm Young of Ac/Dc. The sound, the rhythm, the style the approach to the songs. The whole thing would sound very "thin" without Parfitt. He`s been one of my guitarheroes for ages, and not just for his playing but when you look at the stage and you can`t see him you have to look twice to see if it`s Quo. Parfitt and Rossi show what they can do on a stage at Montreux in 2009. They play so well together, and have done so since The Beatles said Hello and Goodbye. I have several live recordings of Quo on blu-ray, dvd and cd..and LP..but this one is one of their best. We keep saying that bands slow down and get softer as they get older. No rule without an exception and THIS is it! Review: Modern production, HD sound and vision, classic quo! - This review is about the bluray version . I watched this on a 8ft projection screen, surround sound etc. and the picture and sound is absolutely top quality. Classic quo numbers and great production just suck you into the concert. I especially like the lack of gimmicky cut away clips or trick lense shots that I see too much on concert videos. This is shot straight, from all the angles, and you get a great sense of a live concert. Great fun.

Status Qua Live at Montreux on Blu Ray
I have only had my Blu Ray player since the summer, and am starting to build up a suitable library. I have been into live music for longer than I care to remember and have never been to see Quo live, so I was delighted to see last summer's concert on B R DVD. I have a 32inch Samsung, plus an Arcam amp playing into home built speakers featuring a simple folded horn design which sound lovely and compare favourably with commercial units. The picture quiality is amazing, even down to being able to see individual hairs at times! Audience shots are very clear, to say nothing of the band, and their repertoire is typical Quo. The sound was fantastic through my system, and was well worth buying. There are interviews and bonus material included as well, and the interviews with Rossi and Parfitt were illuminating and enjoyable too. Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder, and there will no doubt be people out there who disagree with these sentiments. Perhaps they are not into Quo music? If you are I would say buy it you'll like it.

No atmosphere
I am a Quo and fan but despite the usual quality output from the band there is no atmosphere at this venue ( I suppose we are in ). Sorry but not great.

Formidable.

Brilliant concert, good for old fans and new
Status Quo. What can you say? They evolve and adapt with the times. You can't really say any vintage was a golden age as they're all solid gold. This is a truly superb gig, marred only by the fact that, at this point, they've too much good material to fit into a single set. Not impressed with the extras, but what extras can you put into a concert DVD anyway? I'm not going to deduct stars for not doing the impossible. The sets are basic and movement around the stage is limited. Quo has always been like that. They're highly skilled musicians, they can play blazingly fast, their voices have held up better than they have for many rock/boogie groups, but if you're looking for Queen-style theatrics or Iron Maiden's operatic drama, you won't find it here. Quo are under-rated, under-watched and under-appreciated in their domain. If that domain appeals, you can't go wrong with this. It's ok to like other music as well, diversity is good. If you've never heard Quo before, but are willing to give it a go, start with a concert. This would be a good one.
