I just taped the padding piece over the clock opening and voila 95% of the ticking disappears. Then you will notice a delayed "pause" from the visitor while his brain (accustomed to clockwise hand movement is at variance with what his eyes see...or think they see) before they mumble something about the clock but they are not certain that something is wrong. At this point you insist that this is a normal clock, and then act concerned about his vision and inquire if he has had his eyes checked lately by an ophthalmologist. Normally he will suspect that you are tricking him but is not 100% certain..
